Liam Neeson has somehow managed to pull off the ultimate Hollywood transformation: from serious dramatic actor to global action star, without missing a beat. His career spans a wide range of genres, from historical dramas to action thrillers, and he's earned a reputation as a reliable leading man in both serious and commercial roles.
After delivering an Oscar-nominated performance in Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List" (1993), Neeson turned his attention to kicking bad guys to the curb. Enter “Taken” (2008), where he portrayed Bryan Mills, a retired CIA operative who wasn't about to let anyone mess with his daughter. The film was such a hit that it practically turned him into a one-man action franchise.
His role in "Taken" turned him into a global action star who became known for his calm and intense on-screen presence, leading to sequels and similar roles in films like “Unknown” (2011) and “The Grey” (2012).
Whether he's discussing his roles in dramatic films or action blockbusters in interviews, Neeson is usually very cool, calm and collected. However, during an appearance he had on "The View," Neeson played it cool during the segment, but it was clear that the rather intrusive and awkward questions caught the actor off guard.
In a rare moment of candidness, Neeson, who’s known for taking things in stride, made it clear that some boundaries had been crossed, and he later described the encounter with Joy Behar as "embarrassing."
In February 2023, Neeson was interviewed by Rolling Stone, and the interviewer recalled his unfortunate appearance on "The View": “I did watch your recent appearance on The View, which seemed totally chaotic through no fault of your own.”
The actor, who’s faced everything from life-threatening movie stunts to intense dramatic roles, found himself squirming as "The View" hosts pushed topics he felt were out of line.
Before joining the hosts onstage, Neeson had been watching the show from the dressing room. During a commercial break, he came on set and complimented the women for addressing such an important topic — gun violence in America. However, things took an unexpected turn when the segment began. Neeson explained:
“And then our segment starts and it’s just all this BS with Joy (Behar) and Liam Neeson and having a crush.”
As they sat around the table, co-host Sunny Hostin brought up the fact that Behar has a well-known admiration for Neeson, saying, “It’s no secret Joy thinks you’re the hottest and the greatest ever.”
That’s when the awkwardness escalated. The show then aired multiple clips of Behar talking about her fondness for Neeson over the years, including one where she joked about wanting her "ashes sprinkled over Liam Neeson."
Behar, visibly embarrassed, asked if she was blushing after seeing the clips. While most of the panel chuckled, Neeson wasn’t as amused.
He later shared during his Rolling Stone interview:
“... I’ve known Whoopi (Goldberg) for years and Joy a little bit, but I just wasn’t impressed.” The actor admitted he was uncomfortable, adding, “I’m uncomfortable in those situations, you know?”
Despite the tension, Neeson mentioned that he did manage to engage in a “good, intelligent conversation” with Hostin.
But he couldn't shake the feeling that the segment was more focused on his supposed “thirteen, fourteen-year-old crush,” which he found "a bit embarrassing."
