Kim Cattrall Will Be Reprising Her Role On ‘Sex and The City’ Reboot ‘And Just Like That’ After 13 Years

The show "Sex and the City" was a landmark moment for female characters on television. Following the lives of four friends in Manhattan, New York, the HBO series broke new ground in the way that it depicted women in their 30s looking for love but who wasn't afraid of having a fun time while they did it. 

"Sex and the City" propelled its four lead actresses to the top of Hollywood's A-list, and after six seasons and two movies, it bid farewell to its beloved characters — Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York.

That was until the beginning of 2021 when rumors that had circulated for years of a new installment came true — "Sex and the City" would be making a comeback! Titled "And Just Like That," the new installment of the show will be returning to HBO, this time premiering on HBO Max, and will come in the form of a limited 10-episode series. The original actresses who made the show iconic will be coming back, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, except Kim Cattrall. 

However, in a 2023 exclusive report, it seemed like Cattrall has finally agreed to return despite the longstanding feud between her and Parker. 

A short video promo for "And Just Like That" was released back in 2021, but besides Parker's iconic voiceover, there was no footage of the characters. Instead, the video short featured the show's arguably fifth main character — New York City.

Once it was confirmed that Cattrall wouldn't be returning to "And Just Like That," rumors were rife that the series' producers would kill off her character. But HBO executive Casey Bloys put these rumors to rest when he told TVLine earlier this year that the character wouldn't be recast and would simply be written out of the storyline instead. 

"Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…."

He continued, revealing a bit about the reboot's focus:

"They're trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you're 30, you may not have when you're 50."

For longtime fans, it is consoling to know that the show's producers likely won't tarnish Cattrall's reputation in the show, as despite not being the central character, she was probably the fans' favorite.

Unbeknownst to many, Cattrall and Parker had some tensions on the set back then when the show was in production. 

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker revealed that the producers of the show were not "comfortable" meeting where Cattrall's demands to green-light the "Sex and the City" revival, which ultimately led to the axing of the show. 

"We didn't do the movie because we didn't want to do it without Kim," Parker confessed. "Were we disappointed? Sure. But it happens."

In a Vanity Fair report, it was revealed that Cattrall "officially severed" her ties with the franchise after she publicly criticized Parker, even saying that she has "never been friends" with her co-stars and slammed her for allegedly exploiting her brother's death in 2018.

However, in a stunning turn of events, Cattrall was reported to finally be reprising her role in "And Just Like That."

In a Variety exclusive report, it was revealed that Cattrall would be appearing in only one of the scenes. It was reported that she had shot her dialogue on Mar. 22, 2023, in New York City. 

Notably, she did not see nor speak with any of the stars in the series; this includes Parker and even the showrunner, Michael Patrick King. 

In the new show, Cattrall's character was not written out of the show; it has only been suggested that she will be moving to London. During the first season of the show, Parker's character engaged in a conversation with Cattrall's character, who invited her to have a cocktail in Paris.

Per the publication, Cattrall's scene was reported to be a phone conversation between her character and Parker. Meanwhile, the source revealed that Cattrall's appearance on the show is not in any way a continuation of her character yet, and will most likely be a one-time thing. 

Patricia Field, the Award-winning costume designer of "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Sex and the City," reportedly dressed Cattrall in the new scene, despite not working for the revival production. 

Meanwhile, another entertainment insider elaborated to The New York Post more about the upcoming cameo. 

"The fact that they're keeping it very hush-hush says that there's some implication that she might be coming back — not this season, but it's definitely a cliffhanger that's gonna get people to come back for Season 3," they told the outlet. A spokesperson of HBO also confirmed the news to the outlet.
