Khloe Kardashian Among Other Stars Speaks Openly On Freezing Her Eggs

Nov 12, 2020

It seems there's a new trend in Tinseltown in which female celebrities are planning for their futures and freezing their eggs in order to have babies later in life. The move has become more common in recent years, but especially for celebs it seems, who are busy building their careers and putting off motherhood until later on.

From Khloe Kardashian to Emma Roberts, we take a look at the women who have been open about freezing their eggs.

Earlier this year in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians that aired in April, Khloe revealed that she had decided to freeze her eggs. The 36-year-old mother to daughter True spoke about her happiness being single, but was considering whether her daughter should have a sibling. She said:

"I decided that I am going to freeze my eggs...because there’s no downside to it, so why not?"

Asked by her mom Kris Jenner if she was "going to make any embryos" with True's father Tristan Thompson's sperm, Khloe said, "I'm not there yet."

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara had frozen embryos with her former fiancé Nick Loeb. However in 2015, after the couple had broken up, Loeb filed a lawsuit against his ex for custody of the two embryos. In the end, the lawsuit was dropped after it turned out that Vergara hadn't wanted to destroy the embryos and that Loeb's claims had no merit.

British pop star Rita Ora is only turning 30 this year, but back in 2017, she made headlines when she revealed on Australian television show Sunrise that she'd had her eggs frozen in her early 20s. She had said she wants to have a big family and the idea was her doctor's, explaining:

“He said, ‘You’re healthy now and it would be great; why not put them away and then you never have to worry about it again?’”

Musician Halsey is one of the younger celebrities on the list—at just 26 years old, the New Jersey native went public about freezing her eggs in 2018, when she was only 23. She has her reasons for undergoing the procedure though, explaining that after being diagnosed with endometriosis and suffering from a miscarriage on stage, she's eager to best prepare herself, as People reports:

“Doing ovarian reserve is important for me, because I’m fortunate enough to have that as an option, and I need to be aggressive about protecting my fertility [and] about protecting myself.”

In July 2016, Halsey told Rolling Stone that she wants to be a mother more than she wants to be a pop star, "More than I want to be anything in the world."

Olivia Munn

Back in April 2016, Olivia Munn revealed on Anna Faris' podcast that she'd frozen "a bunch of eggs" when she was younger. She added:

"It’s no longer on the experimental list and I think that every girl should do it. For one, you don’t have to race the clock anymore. You don’t have to worry about it, worry about your job or anything. It’s there."

Emma Roberts

Similar to Halsey's decision to freeze her eggs after being diagnosed with endometriosis, actress Emma Roberts went through a similar process. After struggling through painful periods and years of no formal diagnosis, it was confirmed the actress had the disorder and had her eggs frozen after she was told:

"‘You should probably freeze your eggs or look into other options.'”

Now Emma is pregnant with her partner, actor Garret Hedlund, and even posed for a Cosmopolitan cover showing off her proud baby bump.

Another young starlet who is already future-proofing her chances of motherhood is 23-year-old Savannah Chrisley, who revealed that if she doesn't have children by the age of 27 she'll be freezing her eggs. Also diagnosed with endometriosis, Chrisley told Us Weekly:

“I’ve always said that God meant for me to be a mother...So the thought of not being able to have kids is something that I really struggled with. I have said that if by the age of, like, 25, 27, if I don’t have kids yet, then I will freeze my eggs.”

Star of Netflix's Selling Sunset, Chrishell Stause told People magazine in September of this year that she was taking steps to freeze her eggs. The 39-year-old explained:

“I definitely had a different idea for where I would be at this age and stage in my life. There’s a family aspect that I’m missing that I hope is still a possibility for me.”
