Apr 29, 2021
Katey Sagal is famous for her incredible abilities as an actress, singer and songwriter. She has spent her career working on a number of projects, some even alongside her current husband, Kurt Sutter, who has also made a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Throughout her busy schedule, Sagal found time to settle down, get married and start a family. Some of her children have even expressed considering following in her footsteps as an entertainer.
Sagal was born Jan. 19, 1954, in Los Angeles, California. Her family was already well-known in the entertainment industry. Her mother, Sara Zwilling, was a singer, producer and television writer, who went by the stage name Sara Macon. Sagal’s father, Boris Sagal, was a television director. He immigrated from Ukraine to obtain a career in television. He has an astounding 100 credits as a director on a variety of projects, as well as credits as a writer and producer on a few others.
Her parents passed down their talents to the children, notably with three of Sagal’s siblings also becoming actors. She was surrounded by stars throughout her life, including her own godfather, prominently acclaimed sitcom producer and writer Norman Lear.
Sagal grew up in a family that had already made a name for themselves within the world of entertainment. There must be something in their genes, as Sagal’s parents both had a number of incredible talents. They each had their own successful careers, helping their children follow their dreams along the way. Sagal, along with her siblings, picked up on those habits and worked on developing their own talents to further their personal careers later on. Sagal then passed on her love and passion for acting and musicianship to her children, including her now-famous son Jackson James White.
From Musician To Actress
Sagal made the choice to venture into the entertainment business from an early age. After graduating from Palisades High School, she attended the California Institute of the Arts. Soon after, Sagal found herself jump-starting her career as a singer and a songwriter. In 1973, she worked as a background vocalist for a number of critically acclaimed singers, such as Bob Dylan and Etta James. She worked as a backing singer in The Harlettes, Bette Midler’s backup group, in 1978 and again from 1982 to 1983. Her voice can also be heard in an array of songs from other artists like Gene Simmons and Olivia Newton-John.
Sagal took her career to the next level with the release of her first solo album, “Well…” in April 1994. After a 10-year gap, she released her second studio album, “Room”, in June 2004. Sagal’s first album was released under the label Virgin Records and had 12 tracks, with her singing and piano-playing skills being showcased throughout the record. “Room” was a bit shorter with only 10 songs featured on the album. Sagal had signed with a new label for her second album, releasing it under Valley Entertainment. Both compilations were in the adult contemporary genre.
Sagal’s acting career took off early with the help of her father. One of her first jobs came from a job on “Columbo,” a show her father directed, in 1973. She got her major big-break with a major role in the series “Mary” in 1985. She worked on “Mary” for a year, picking up jobs in other television series and movies shortly afterwards.

Sagal starred in the hit TV sitcom “Married… with Children” from 1987 until 1997, taking on the leading role of Peggy Bundy. Sagal’s career continued with small roles in various shows and movies. In 2008, she got cast in “Sons of Anarchy,” which was created in part by her husband. She worked on the series until 2014.
While she is most notably known for her role in “Sons of Anarchy” as an actress, Sagal also lent her musical abilities to the series by contributing to the official soundtrack. Her most recent career move comes from landing a leading role in the new ABC drama series “Rebel,” a 2021 crime and drama series.
Having a similar love for the entertainment industry, it made sense when Sutter and Sagal found love with one another. According to a People Magazine, Sagal had a private ceremony for her marriage with Sutter in October 2004. It was held in their family home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, California. According to People, Sagal wore a Reem Acra wedding dress, while Sutter wore a Prada suit. Some of their friends and co-workers were among the guests at the wedding.
Sutter is a well-known screenwriter, actor, director and producer. He was born May 5, 1960, in Rahway, New Jersey. He graduated from Roselle Catholic High School in 1982, before moving on to attend college. He then went to Rutgers University, studying in the journalism program. He received his bachelor’s degree in mass media with a minor in English, and graduated in 1986.
Sagal’s Successful Husband
Shortly after his graduation, Sutter made the decision to move to New York City where he got more involved with theater. Sutter enjoyed his time on stage and learning more about the arts, and actually made the choice to go back to school for a new degree in 1997, redirecting his focus to the entertainment field. He earned his Master’s of Fine Arts in performing in directing after three years at Northern Illinois University. In 2000, he took the next big step in his career and moved across the country to Los Angeles, California.
Sutter quickly found work and was hired as a staff writer for the first season of “The Shield” in 2002. Not too long after, he made his television acting debut with an episode of the series. He worked his way up in the show, being promoted to story editor in 2003. He then became a co-producer for the third season of “The Shield” in 2004, before once again being promoted and moving up to supervising producer the following year.
In 2008, Sutter worked as both an executive producer for “The Shield” and for “Sons of Anarchy,” both shows from the FX Network. He starred in the show alongside his wife after making the choice to cast her. Sutter’s work with the network continued for many years after, including his own show developing in 2014. Sagal joined the cast of “The Bastard Executioner” and got to work with her husband once again. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after only one season.
Recollection And Accolades
Sagal took her talents to yet another venture with the release of her memoir “Grace Notes: My Recollection.” The book was published in March 2017 and consists of a series of essays written by Sagal. Throughout the memoir, Sagal talked about the ups and downs of her personal life, talking about how her parents’ deaths impacted her as well as her thoughts on her overall career. The actress’s incredibly long career showcased her skills in various genres and on a number of networks. Her hard work paid off, as she has been nominated for plenty of awards, picking up a few over the years. Sagal won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama for her role in “Sons of Anarchy” in 2011. In 2013, she won the Prism Award for Female Performance in a Drama Series, Multi-Episode Storyline again for her role in the hit series. Sagal was awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in September 2014, with plenty of her previous castmates from “Married… with Children” attending the ceremony to celebrate.
Despite her wonderfully busy career, Sagal has managed to find the time to find love and start a family. She married her first husband Fred Beckmeier in 1978, but the pair divorced a few years later in 1981. Sagal was then married to Jack White from 1993 until 2000. She married her current husband, Sutter, in 2004. The pair welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Esme, in 2007.
Sagal’s Children
In 1991, Sagal found out she was pregnant. She was currently working on “Married… with Children,” and the unexpected announcement was written into the show’s storyline. She unfortunately lost the baby during the seventh month of her pregnancy, resulting in the show’s writers treating her pregnancy like a dream in the series.
Sagal had her first daughter, Sarah Grace White, with her second husband in 1994. Sagal and White welcomed their second child, son Jackson James, two years later in March 1996. She still worked on “Married… with Children” while pregnant, but the writer’s decided to not include it as part of the plot this time around. Instead, the bottom half of her body was obstructed by objects whenever she appeared on camera, once her stomach became noticeably big.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2014, Sagal talked about her children and expressed her feelings about them entering the entertainment industry. She was joined by her daughter. Despite her impressive resume, Sagal wanted to raise her children as modestly as possible. “I wanted them to have as normal a life as possible,” she said.
Sagal’s daughter, Sarah, chimed in. She talked about how her mother was actually the one who inspired her to follow her own dreams in the field of entertainment. “I am studying drama now at Kenyon College in Ohio and also write and sing, because I saw how my mom put so much of herself into her music and acting,” Sarah told The Hollywood Reporter.
Even though she wanted her children to have a normal life, Sagal was excited when her children started telling her that they wanted to try their hand at taking their talents to the next level professionally.

“It’s a huge relief when your kids say, ‘I want to do what you do,’ and there’s natural talent there,” Sagal explained. Sagal talked more about how much she has enjoyed her career as both an actress and musician, and how grateful she is that her children acquired similar talents. “The greatest thrill of my life has been making a living as an artist, and I think Sarah, and all my kids, have gotten a very realistic view,” she said. “It’s very hard work, but there’s nothing I can do to stop her. She has talent in spades.”
Sagal’s son Jackson grew up to follow in his mother’s footsteps, stepping into the music industry. According to E Celebrity Mirror, he grew up in a musical household where he learned how to sing and play various instruments. Jackson and his mother have even performed together a few times, creating a stunning mother-son duo.
Sagal seemed to pass down more than just her many skills in music, but also her skills in acting. Her son officially entered the acting universe with his high school’s production of “RENT” when he was just 14-years-old. He has since appeared on a number of television shows and is currently working on a list of projects.

Jackson’s Future Career
During an interview with KTLA 5 from October 2019, Jackson talked about his character in “Mrs. Fletcher” and his acting career in general. “Brendan, the character, he has this set of principles toward women that are very… bone-head,” he said. “He doesn’t really know how to deal with people.” Jackson explained how important this role was for his career. “This is the biggest thing I’ve ever done,” he said. Although he had taken a different career path prior to making it on the small screen, he explained how school wasn’t necessarily for him. “I gave college a try,” Jackson said. It didn’t last very long.”
Jackson has worked on a few other projects. That work will be featured in the upcoming years, with some of the projects he’s worked on either being completed or in the final stages of post-production. Jackson shared a picture on his Instagram in February 2021 depicting an upcoming project he would be featured in. The photo was a screenshot of an article about how Jackson has joined the cast of “Ambulance,” an action-thriller directed by Michael Bay. Jackson has also acquired a large following on his Instagram account, gaining over 13 thousand followers since his first photo was uploaded back in January 2019.
