Kate Winslet Gushes Over Hot And ‘Superhuman’ Husband Edward Abel Smith, A Stay-At-Home Father

Jun 02, 2021

Kate Winslet is one of the more well-known stars of today thanks to her iconic role as Rose on "Titanic." The late 90s flick is one of the top-grossing movies of all time and remains in the hearts of every romantic in the world. The movie put both Winslet and her co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, on the map, and both stars were propelled into an illustrious career afterward. While DiCaprio has gone on to star in multiple critically acclaimed Hollywood movies throughout his life, Winslet has been more discerning of the movies she chose.

This isn't to say that Winslet's career has been any less distinguished. Most recently, Winslet has been starring in the HBO mini-series "Mare of Easttown," where she plays Mare Sheehan, a police detective who Winslet described as a "wildly flawed, messy, broken, fragmented, difficult woman. I loved her marks and her scars and her faults and her flaws and the fact that she has no off switch, no stop button. She just knows ‘Go,’" in an inter interview with The New York Times in May 2021.

The "Mare Of Easttown" is a murder mystery with many themes such as grief, the opioid crisis, small-town life but also as Winslet essentially describes it, as being "about mothers protecting their children at all costs, and the lengths that a parent will go to in order to protect their children."

While talking about the show, Winslet, mother of three, also opened up about her husband, Edward Abel Smith, who was formerly known as Ned Rocknroll.

During her interview with the New York Times, Winslet called her husband, a "superhot, superhuman, stay-at-home dad." Winslet married Smith in 2012 and shares seven-year-old son Bear Blaze with him.

"He looks after us, especially me. I said to him earlier, like, 'Neddy, could you do something for me?' He just went, 'Anything,'" she told the news outlet. She also added that Smith is "an absolutely extraordinary life partner."

She also spoke about how Smith helps her with her work as well. "I'm so, so, so lucky. For a man who is severely dyslexic, as he is, he's great at testing me on lines. It's so hard for him to read out loud, but he still does it," Winslet said.

As for whether Smith was looking out to marry a movie star, the answer is a resounding no. "He didn’t particularly plan on meeting and marrying a woman who is in the public eye and therefore having been so judged," Winslet said. However, she added that Smith handles the attention well.

Smith, who used to go by the name Ned Rocknroll from 2008 to 2019, is actually the polar opposite of his past surname as per Winslet. "He's vegan, does yoga, breath work and cold water swims," she told NYT

The story of Winslet and Smith's meeting is "fiery" to say the least. Harper's Bazaar reported that the couple first met on the night of the infamous fire on Richard Branson's Necker Island. The news outlet reported that Smith is Branson's nephew. "We really could have died," she recalled about that night. "The house burned to the ground."

That night, Winslet helped Branson's mother escape the fire. "I carried her out of the house and down some very slippery stone steps. Lucky she's tiny!" Winslet said. "She's my son's great-grandmother now, so it's such a strange thing to talk about." Smith and Winslet's son, Bear, got the middle name "Blaze" to recognize the first meeting between the couple.

Winslet also has two other children, one from each of her marriages. She has 20-year-old daughter Mia Threapleton from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton, and 17-year-old Joe, whom she shares with ex-husband Sam Mendes

Mia is following in her mother's footsteps and has also taken up acting. Her most recent film was "Shadows," which was released in 2020. About taking on the movie, Mia told Variety in an interview, "'Shadows' was the first film I’d received an audition for, and the first script I had ever been given to read. I couldn’t believe my luck. I read it and didn’t put it down. Which is admitting a lot because I’m dyslexic and that means I have to read slowly and steadily to be able to absorb things fully sometimes."

While Mia grew up with a would famous mother, she wasn't always surrounded by the spotlight. "I never actually spent much time around sets that my mum was working on." Mia added. "It was always a special treat. It’s a very different experience when it is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time."

Winslet has done well raising her children, as is evidenced by Mia saying, "I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right! And I loved every second of it."
