May 17, 2023

One of Hollywood's most iconic actors is "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp. He has appeared in several of director Tim Burton's films throughout his illustrious career, including "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "Alice in Wonderland." Depp is widely regarded as one of the world's most famous movie stars and was listed as the highest-paid actor by Guinness World Records in 2012.

Depp dropped out of high school and began his career as a musician before moving into acting. He made his movie debut in 1984 with the horror film "A Nightmare on Elm Street." Some of the star's other notable films include "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Finding Neverland," and "Donnie Brasco."

In his personal life, Depp has been married and divorced twice. He has also had long-term relationships with other women, including Winona RyderKate Moss, and Vanessa Paradis, who is the mother of his two children. Paradis and Depp were together from 1998 to 2012.

Depp has been on the receiving end of negative publicity, especially after his private life started unfolding in public. In 2015, he married Amber Heard, but she filed for a divorce in 2016, and more information regarding their relationship has since become known. In 2020, Depp lost his libel suit in the UK after The Sun called him a "wife-beater." However, in 2022, a US court sided with Depp in a defamation trial.

Easing back into fame, Depp made his film comeback on the Louis XV period drama "Jeanne du Barry." The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in France, to which Depp received resounding applause and cheering from the crowd the moment he arrived on the red carpet and after the film was shown. In 2003, Depp starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in the adventure film "Pirates of the Caribbean." The film was an instant hit with fans and critics alike, doing extremely well at the box office and at award shows. It's not surprising that the movie spawned a successful film franchise.

However, Depp faced some career setbacks in the late 2010s and early 2020s. He appeared in both "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" and "Murder on the Orient Express" in 2017. The following year, he portrayed the role of Grindelwald in "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," which was the sequel to the 2016 film "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Afterward, though, Depp didn't act in many major films, and it was unclear which direction his career was headed in. However, back in January 2022, Variety reported that Depp was scheduled to star as French King Louis XV, "Louis the Beloved," in a film titled "Jeanne du Barry."

Depp's film was directed by Maiwenn, who is known for other works such as "Polisse" and "Mon Roi."

Meanwhile, Cannes Film Festival's chief Thierry Fremaux addressed the controversy of making Depp's movie become the opening film of the prestigious festival.

"I don't know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US. To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it's the freedom of thinking and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework," he told reporters as quoted by People Magazine

The 76th Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet premiere took place on May 16, 2023, in France, with actors like Elle FanningUma ThurmanBrie LarsonMichael DouglasCatherine Zeta-Jones, and Dame Hellen Mirren gracing the premiere.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp and #Cannes2023 were both trending topics on Twitter following the ongoing rage surrounding Depp's trial with Heard.

Depp's film not only premiered at the festival but also in theaters across France. Notably, one of the theatres was reported to be distributing flyers saying these both in French and English:

"Choosing to open the world's most prestigious film festival with an attacker waving at the crowd on the red carpet … conveys a clear, devastating message. In 2023, the voices of victims and their allies continue to be questioned, ignored and silenced by others."

However, it did not stop the army of Depp's loyal followers from showering him with love and support on his big film comeback.

Arriving in a slicked-back hair clasped in a ponytail, Depp, in sunglasses, was heavily guarded by security as he signed autographs and posed for pictures with his excited fans.

Fans could be heard shouting "Viva Johnny!" while many shouted his name repeatedly in excitement and joy.

As soon as they entered the theatres, Depp and his cast were greeted with a warm round of applause and a standing ovation. After the exclusive screening, Maïwenn and Depp were met with another standing ovation to which they "teared up."

In a report from The Daily Mail, Depp and his team received a staggering seven-minute standing ovation from the audience. However, the outlet also revealed that critics have mixed reactions to Depp's performance. Some said it was "great to see Depp in subtle and quiet mode."
