Johnny Depp Admits He Was ‘Difficult’ During Relationship With Kate Moss That Ended In 'Nightmare' Breakup

Jun 05, 2022

One of Hollywood's most iconic actors is "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp. He has appeared in several of director Tim Burton's films throughout his illustrious career, including "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "Alice in Wonderland." Depp is widely regarded as one of the world's most famous movie stars and was listed as the highest-paid actor by Guinness World Records in 2012.

Born in 1963 in Kentucky, Depp's parents are Betty Sue Palmer and Christopher Depp. His mother was a waitress, and his father was a civil engineer, so neither of his parents were actors. After moving a lot, the family eventually settled down in Miramar, Florida.

At the age of 12, Depp began playing guitar. After his parent's divorce in 1978, he dropped out of school with the idea that he was going to pursue becoming a rockstar before moving into acting. He made his movie debut in 1984 with the horror film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and quickly went on to become a household name.

Depp has been in several high-profile relationships over the years and some lesser-known relationships. He was married to Lori Allison from 1983 to 1985 before dating Jennifer Grey and later proposing to Winona Ryder. Depp also had a long-lasting relationship with Vanessa Paradis, whom he shares two kids with. He was also once married to Amber Heard.

However, one relationship that many people are still intrigued by is Depp's relationship with English model Kate Moss. Read on to find out more about why their relationship didn't work out.

Depp and Moss had a rollercoaster of a relationship. According to Parade, when they first started dating, they couldn't "keep their hands, lips, mouths, legs off of each other." According to Hello! Magazine, the pair first met back in 1994 in New York. At the time, Depp was 31 years old while Moss was 20. "I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together," Moss said.

It's clear that the English model was right, as she and Depp began dating shortly after. It seemed like they had the potential to be the next Hollywood power couple, and it wasn't long before they were viewed as the "it" couple of the 1990s.

Author Nigel Goodall shared some insight into the beginnings of Moss and Depp's relationship in his book "The Secret World of Johnny Depp: The Intimate Biography of Hollywood's Best-Loved Rebel." The pair seemed inseparable at first. Depp threw Moss an extravagant surprise party at the Viper Room in West Hollywood for the model's 21st birthday. Moss was just as brilliant at surprising Depp as she once gifted him a pitbull terrier named Moo.

However, behind the scenes, there were some issues. According to Parade, Depp was arrested in September 1994 after destroying a hotel room following an argument with Moss. There were several other challenging incidents, but the couple worked to make their relationship last.

At one point, many people even thought that Depp and Moss had gotten engaged. However, they ended up splitting after being together for four years. Surprisingly, they appeared together briefly at the Cannes Film Festival shortly after their breakup in May 1998, according to Hello! Magazine.

According to Goodall, Moss had been open to the idea of continuing to date Depp "occasionally," but Depp was not interested in an "open" relationship. They had had many tiffs beforehand, but this breakup was final.

The split was clearly hard on Depp, and he even admitted that their relationship's failure was his fault. "I have never got that emotional over a woman before," he said. "I have been so stupid because we had so much going for our relationship. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for what happened – I was difficult to get on with, I let my work get in the way, and I didn't give her the attention I should have."

Depp also said:

"If I could have taken things more easily and not got so depressed about my work and other garbage, we could have been so happy. I don't know, maybe I just couldn't deal with the fact that things were so good between us and had to act like an idiot and push her away."

Moss was left broken-hearted and opened up about her relationship many years later in 2012 during an interview with Vanity Fair. She said:

"There's nobody that's ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, 'What do I do?' he'd tell me. And that's what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!"

Following their breakup, Depp and Moss went on to have very successful careers and engage in other relationships in the years to follow. Although the stars have a long history together, it seems that the two are on good terms nowadays.
