John Stamos Was ‘Devastated’ His ‘Full House’ Family Got ‘Turned Upside Down’ Because of Controversies
Apr 17, 2023
The sitcom "Full House" was a huge success in the late '80s and early '90s and it propelled many of its stars to fame. Among them was John Stamos who played the hunky Uncle Jesse, a surefire drawcard for women everywhere. Other notable actors included Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, young girls at the time, who played the singular role of Michelle Tanner, while Stamos' close friend Bob Saget also became very well known.
The show would run for eight years, airing from 1987 to 1995, but to the delight of fans, it wouldn't be the last the world would see of "Full House," when two decades later in 2015, Netflix announced they would be reviving the show. The reboot adapted the name slightly to "Fuller House" and was released in 2016.
Despite the fact that the Olsen twins didn't reprise their role as Michelle Tanner, the rest of the cast all returned as regular characters or guest roles. "Fuller House" aired for five seasons to mixed reviews, however, many of the original actors on the show, got thrown into their respective controversies which affected the reception of the reboot.
Stamos, Saget, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin and Lori Loughlin, all returned for the reboot, but when Netflix canceled the show eventually, many of the actors went into disarray and have been a broken family since.
In a Radar Online report, Stamos, who has since been a well-loved actor because of his kindness on and off-screen, was allegedly said to be having a hard time seeing his television family plummet into scandals and tragedies. Read on to learn more about Stamos's thoughts.
Even with all of his success as an actor, it seems that the role Stamos wished to play all his life was as a father. Even while he played Uncle Jesse, it was clear that he had the dad gene in him. In fact, his co-stars on "Full House," Cameron Bure, Andrea Barber and Sweetin, told PEOPLE that Stamos was the "baby whisperer" of the cast. It turns out there were always children in the future for him, as he once joked to US Weekly that he wanted children so badly that his "ovaries were rattling."
"It's just taken me a lot longer than I anticipated. It would be a tragedy if I didn't have children and I finally found the right woman — the perfect woman,” he told ET.
Well, thankfully, he found the perfect woman in his now-wife, Caitlin McHugh. In the same interview with US Weekly, he described McHugh as a "gentle, kind, graceful soul who would be a good mother."
They both clearly knew that this relationship was the one and therefore wasted little time in taking the next steps. By October 2017, Stamos had proposed to McHugh after two years of dating. The couple eventually tied the knot on Feb. 3, 2018, in a romantic church service at the Little Brown Church in Studio City, California.
Just over two months after their wedding, Stamos and McHugh welcomed their first son together. It was clear that Stamos' status as everyone's favorite uncle on television had gotten an upgrade. Being a family-oriented person, it was reported that Stamos was pained to see his other family – his co-stars – be in such chaos in their respective lives.

In 2020, Loughlin was sentenced to two months in prison after being involved in a nationwide college bribery and fraud scandal. Aside from the prison time she served, she was also fined $150,000 upon her supervised release and had to undergo one hundred hours of community service. Her husband, on the other hand, was jailed for five months and served 250 hours of community service along with a fine.
According to a Radar Online insider close to Stamos, who is a “get-along kind of guy,” the actor reportedly had “a hard time watching his TV family unravel before the public.”
During Loughlin’s scandal, Stamos publicly vouched for her innocence but was still criticized by many. When Cameron Bure and Sweetin had their spat after the former’s anti-LGBTQ stance received flak, especially from the latter, Stamos remained mum.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal detailing her move from Hallmark Channel to Great American Family, Cameron Bure said the company “will keep traditional marriage at the core,” alluding to Hallmark’s move to feature same-sex couples in their movies.
"Johny loves Candace but he caught a lot of crap for defending Lori," the insider revealed.
Sweetin and Cameron Bure were alleged to have unfollowed each other on Instagram after the former expressed support for someone who slammed the latter on her views.
“John has always wanted everything to be perfect for his TV family. He's devastated it's turned upside down," the source said.
Aside from Loughlin’s arrest and Cameron Bure and Sweetin’s drama, the news of Saget’s death affected Stamos in magnitudes.
"Losing Bob and seeing his other co-stars' lives take strange turns have really been tough on him," the insider added.
Saget passed away in January 2022 after a brain bleed caused by a traumatic brain injury.
