John Stamos Struggles To Hold Back Tears While Revealing That 'Full House' Co-Star Jodie Sweetin Helped Him Get Sober

Jul 08, 2019

Most of us will recognize Jodie Sweetin as the actress who portrayed Stephanie Tanner alongside John Stamos as Uncle J. in Full House. The two, however, share a special bond that goes beyond what we saw on the small screen.

In fact, the two are so close that Stamos revealed she helped him throughout his struggle with addiction, a struggle he kept out of the public eye for many years.

The revelation came at the Writers in Treatment award ceremony, where Sweetin received the Experience, Strength and Hope Award for her memoir unSweetined. During the ceremony, Stamos gave a speech explaining how Sweetin helped him through his struggle with addiction.

It is no secret that Sweetin struggled with addiction for a while. Now at age 41, the actress has been sober for over a decade. Since overcoming addiction, she obtained a degree in drugs and alcohol councelling and, as it’s recently been revealed, helped Stamos through his struggle with substance abuse too.

“It took me a long time, a long time disappointing everyone who cared about me, culminating in a terrible DUI where I could have killed somebody,” said Stamos. “I hit rock bottom.”

He revealed that Sweetin was the only person in his life at that moment who could get through to him and help him get sober.

“Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom and was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life,” he continued.

The 59-year-old explained how Sweetin would organize 12-step-programs at his home and on the set of Full House. The actor just had his first child with wife Caitlin last year and accredited Sweetin with his family knowing him as a sober man.

“Thank god, my wife and my new son will only know me as a sober husband and father,” he said. “This is Jodie’s legacy in my life.”
