John Lennon’s Grown Children Julian & Sean Continue His Legacy In The Music Industry

Aug 15, 2023

John Lennon had an undeniable talent. He was a part of one of the biggest bands in the world during the 20th century, The Beatles and the band made a significant impact on the music industry as well as the succeeding generations.

This is what exactly happened to the legendary singer as he was able to pass down his love for music to his two children, Julian and Sean Lennon.

Before taking a look at the two Lennons’ success in the 2020s, let’s dive into John Lennon’s personal life.

Born John Winston Lennon on Oct. 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England, the singer was popularly known for being the co-songwriter, founder, and co-lead vocalist of the Beatles.

After the group disbanded in 1970, John went on to have a solo music career. He also collaborated with his second wife, Yoko Ono, on musical projects.

Unfortunately, the musical legend passed away on Dec. 8, 1980. He was reportedly assassinated by Mark David Chapman, who fired five shots at him using a gun in New York City. John was 40 years old at the time.

The singer’s first child, Julian, was born to John’s first wife, Cynthia Lennon, on April 8, 1963. In 2023, Julian is an accomplished musician himself and has grown up to look just like his famous dad.

Even though he was the firstborn, and many would assume that he and his father had a great relationship in the past, he had an issue with his father to the point where he called him a “hypocrite” in an interview.

In a 1998 interview with The TelegraphJulian Lennon said his dad could talk “peace and love to the world,” but he wasn’t able to show it to his own family.

"Dad was a hypocrite. He could talk about peace and love to the world but he could never show it to his wife and son," he told the outlet.

There was also an issue when he was born as John Lennon was not present when Cynthia Lennon gave birth to Julian because he was busy spending time with his Beatles bandmates on the other side of the world.

Julian started his music career at a young age as he appeared on his father’s album titled “Walls and Bridges” by playing drums on the song “Ya-Ya.”

In 1984, he released his debut album “Valotte,” produced by one of the most renowned producers in the music industry, Phil Ramone.

The album was massively successful, as Julian was able to snag a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist the following year.

Regarding his relationship with his dad, he told Larry King in a 2018 interview that John died when he was only 9 and a half years old.

“There was a great deal of anger, but I’ve grown up a lot and there’s been forgiveness since. It was tough, it was very tough,” he said.

In 2023, Julian continued to be active on social media as he constantly shared some of his photography works.

He also remained active in his music career as he released his seventh studio album titled “Jude” in 2022. The record’s title was a reference to the famous Beatles song “Hey Jude” written by his father’s good pal and bandmate, Paul McCartney, which he dedicated to the young Julian.

John’s second son, Sean Lennon, was born on Oct. 9, 1975, in New York City. He was born on the same day as his father’s 35th birthday.

The legendary singer shares his son with his second wife, Yoko Ono. After he was welcomed into the world, John became less active in his musical career as he became a house husband, which made him spend more time with his children.

Sean was only 5 years old when his father passed away.

The youngest child of John launched his solo music career in 1998 with the album “Into the Sun.”

At the time, he spoke with Rolling Stone to reminisce about his father. When asked about what he would say to his dad if given a chance, the singer said, “I would just play him my songs; say, ‘What do you think of that, man?’ I’m sure he would be like, ‘That’s a great song.’ Or, ‘That line could be worked on.”

Since his name is synonymous with his famous father, Sean said he never used it to his advantage as he said, “I have to help achieve my goals. I know for a fact that if I was only Cibo Matto’s bass player and not Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon, I would not be sitting here with you. I would not get the exposure that I’m getting for my record.”

Aside from his solo career, he also became a part of several bands like Cibo Matto, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, his parents’ group Plastic Ono Band, and more.

In 2023, the musician didn’t release any new songs, as his last project was “South of Reality” with The Claypool Lennon Delirium. However, he was credited as the producer of Temples’ 2023 album titled “Exotico.”
