John Amos, 84, Shared An Emotional Dance With His Daughter During ‘Precious Moment’

Feb 22, 2023

John Amos may be in his 80s, but he still sure knows how to have a good time – even if it means throwing his cane aside despite having a hard time walking to share an emotional dance with his daughter. Yes, that’s exactly what he did in October 2022, just weeks before he turned 83!

Born on Dec. 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, John is most notably known for his roles in the television series “Good Times” and the mini-series, “Roots.” Before going on to star in “Good Times,” John played the role of Gordy the weatherman on the CBS series, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” where he acted for the first three seasons.

He went on to star in many more series after that, as well as some movies, one of which is “Coming 2 America,” the sequel to “Coming to America” starring Eddie Murphy.

John met his first wife, artist and equestrian Noel Mickelson from Estherville, Iowa, while attending college at Colorado State University. At the time when they tied the knot, interracial marriage was still illegal in 16 states in the US. They shared two children, Shannon and Kelly Christopher Amos, the latter who is better known as K.C.

“For them, it was love at first sight. However, it was a tumultuous time in the world around them,” Shannon wrote back in June 2020.

Despite the challenges that came their way, John and Mickelson’s love for each other did not falter.

Of course, it didn’t come easy as Shannon was exposed to racism. But she and her brother K.C. managed to get through all those moments because of the love and support of their parents.

K.C., John's only son, looks just like him. Like his father, he has dabbled in acting as well as some directing work and even has a Grammy nomination to his name. He is mainly known, however, as a video editor who loves his work, as shown by his regular postings on his social media.

For K.C., his father’s role in “Good Times” was more than just something he did on screen for a living as he learned lessons from almost all episodes in the show.

"I saw that his role was more than a job; that he was actually helping people through his role as a strong father dedicated to mentoring his TV kids. There were life lessons learned in each weekly episode. It was amazing to watch the show become a hit series, changing the face of television sitcoms, particularly in terms of shows that depicted African-American families,” he said.

Even in his 80s, John still knows how to have some fun. In a video shared by his son KC on Instagram back in July 2021, John could be seen effortlessly busting some moves during an event for a cause in Denver, Colorado.

“Great times with great people for an amazing cause. It doesn’t get much better then #SpreadTheCheerUSA,” he wrote.

In November 2022, John shared a video of him and K.C. having a good time while doing a lip-sync for a song.

“Always #GoodTimes Kickin it w my son @k.c.amos over the holiday,” he said.

But K.C. isn’t the only one close to his father – his sister, Shannon, is too.

In October 2022, John’s daughter Shannon shared a heartwarming video where he was seen dancing with her while Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father” could be heard playing in the background.

Even though he already had a hard time walking, John let go of his cane and went on to share an emotional moment with his daughter. He even kissed his daughter on the cheeks and her forehead while dancing, proving the unbreakable bond between them.

Shannon’s touching video for her dad came as more people hopped on the challenge called #DanceWithMyFatherChallenge. In the caption of her post, Shannon expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to share such a special moment with her dad.

“Grateful for this precious moment with my Dad @officialjohnamos,” Shannon said.

Shannon also challenged other people — especially those who still have their fathers around — to do the challenge and celebrate such a precious moment any child could ever ask for.

“If you’re blessed to still have your Dad, we challenge you to create a precious moment,” she remarked.

Shannon’s post was filled with love. Several said the emotional video made them miss their own fathers.

“You’re so very lucky to have your sweet daddy I lost mine when he was 74 and every day I wish he was still here,” one person comment.

“This really makes me smile, I miss my Dad soo much this is beautiful!” another person said.

“That’s Beautiful. Girl that's my TV daddy,” a person remarked.

“His children look just like him, one of my favorite actors. Beautiful sister,” another person said.

It was indeed a touching moment between a father and a daughter — and every person who gets to witness it is lucky indeed!
