Auditions are usually a big bag of surprises for coaches of the singing reality TV series "The Voice." But on the March 7, 2023, episode of the reality TV series, the coaches got the mother of all surprises when late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon graced the stage with a performance of Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)."
As is customary in blind auditions, the coaches were ignorant of who the performer was until the first coach, Clarkson, hit her buzzer and turned around to see who the singer was. Clarkson immediately burst into laughter as soon as she spotted Fallon. Coaches Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper followed suit, hitting their buzzers and turning around to see Fallon passionately performing the song.
However, the fourth coach, Shelton, remained in place, facing away from the stage. Unfazed, the determined Fallon walked across the stage to Shelton’s chair and pushed the coach’s buzzer himself.
"You can't do that! You broke the rules," Shelton playfully queried.
After the performance ended, Fallon explained the reason for the surprise performance. He revealed that he was there to congratulate Shelton, who was leaving “The Voice” at the end of the season after 23 seasons.
"I texted Carson (Daly) and said, I gotta come over and say, 'Hey Buddy, 23 seasons. Congratulations — you're a legend,'" Fallon said before hugging Shelton for his achievement.
"It didn't take me long to figure out that it was Jimmy Fallon. And there was no way I was gonna hit my button, he does not deserve the chair turn on this show. Jimmy's impersonation is the equivalent of walking up to Michael McDonald and slapping him in the face as hard as you can," Shelton remarked as the video concluded.
