Jim Carrey Lists His 12,700 Sq Ft ‘Sanctuary’ For Sale At $28.9 Million In Retirement Transition

Feb 13, 2023

Jim Carrey is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, and screenwriter who has had a profound impact on the entertainment industry. Born in Newmarket, Ontario, on Jan. 17, 1962, Carrey was raised in a working-class family and showed an early interest in comedy. Despite financial struggles and personal tragedy, he persevered and rose to become one of the most recognizable and beloved comedic performers of his generation.

Carrey began performing stand-up comedy in his late teens and quickly developed a reputation for his energetic and unpredictable performances. In the early 1980s, he moved to Hollywood in search of greater opportunities and soon caught the attention of producers and casting directors. In 1985, he made his big-screen debut in the comedy film "Once Bitten," but it was his role in the 1994 comedy "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" that made him a household name. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Carrey's energetic and over-the-top performance as the titular pet detective won him praise from audiences and critics alike.

In the years that followed, Carrey continued to make a name for himself with a string of successful comedic roles in films such as "The Mask," "Liar Liar," and "Bruce Almighty." He was widely praised for his physical comedy and ability to embody a wide range of quirky and often larger-than-life characters, and his comedic style was often compared to that of classic performers like Jerry Lewis and Charlie Chaplin.

He has also been involved in various charitable and humanitarian efforts, using his fame to raise awareness for causes such as mental health and environmental protection.

The 61-year-old – who was the first actor to earn $20 million for a movie – is estimated to have a net worth of $180 million. Now, he's selling his Los Angeles home for a cool $28.9 million.

Despite his success and widespread popularity, Carrey's personal life has also been marked by tragedy and struggles. He has been open about his battles with depression and his difficult childhood and has used his platform to raise awareness about mental health issues and encourage others to seek help.

Carrey has also pursued new creative endeavors, including painting and writing. In 2011, he released a book entitled "Memoirs and Misinformation," which combined elements of memoir and fiction to tell the story of his life and career. He has also continued to act, appearing in films such as "Sonic the Hedgehog" and its 2022 sequel.

Carrey's impact on the entertainment industry cannot be overstated. With his unique comedic style and ability to bring humor and joy to audiences around the world, he has become a beloved figure and an inspiration to countless aspiring performers. However, Carrey announced in April 2022 that he was stepping back from acting. He told Access Hollywood he was "fairly serious" about retiring and that he was, at the very least, "taking a break."

He added:

"I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."

In line with this, Carrey is also physically moving away from the bright lights of the big city and has put up his Los Angeles home for sale.

In February 2023, it was reported Carrey was letting go of the Brentwood property he had called home for the past 30 years for a cool $28.9 million. The sprawling estate features a five-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion complete with high ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light and rich hardwood flooring. The chef's kitchen is fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, including a six-burner stove, double ovens, and a large island that serves as a breakfast bar. The mansion also boasts an art deco-style home theater.

In addition to its stunning interior, the home also features a lushly landscaped backyard that is perfect for relaxing and entertaining. The main house is also flanked by amenities such as a waterfall pool, hot tub, tennis court, sauna and vegetable garden across 12,700 square feet.

Carrey bought the property just before hitting the big time with "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" for $3.8 million – or equivalent to $7.71 million today – in 1994. According to Vanity Fair, Carrey told the Wall Street Journal the house had been "a place of enchantment and inspiration" to him for more than "30 very creative and prosperous years," but that he felt it was time for something new.

"Every night the owls sang me lullabies and every morning I sipped my cup of joe with the hawks and hummingbirds, under a giant grandfather pine," he told the publication.

"For three decades it's been a sanctuary for me but I don't spend a lot of time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it like I have," he said and added a reference to a David Bowie song, "Cha cha cha cha … Changes!"
