Inside Martha Stewart’s Luxurious Home That She Renovated After Realizing It Was ‘Not For Me’

Martha Stewart has been a prevalent figure in the home and lifestyle industry as she has been successful in multiple professions and endeavors over the course of her life. Most notably, Stewart has gained success through various business ventures, publishing opportunities, merchandising and electronic commerce. Stewart has hosted her own television shows and has also written for many magazines and newspapers, as well as authored her own cookbooks, which quickly became bestsellers.
Stewart's DIY and "try it at home" attitude is certainly one thing her longtime fans love most about her. From cooking and decorating the home to organizational tips, everything can be easily recreated or tried by those watching her shows.
The well-loved television personality and lifestyle expert might be 81 years old already, but she is far from retiring. Proving that age is nothing but a number, the octogenarian started an HGTV series titled "Martha Knows Best" in 2020. The show's focus is on the many aspects of modern living and is aired from her farmstead in Bedford, New York.
Among the many things to be found on her estate, Stewart's farmstead is home to a variety of animals, including chickens, a flock of geese, a few turkeys, Black Welsh mountain sheep and Sicilian donkeys. And inside her house, a large pantry is essential, filled with absolutely all the necessary items for cooking and baking up a storm. Her unique and gorgeous home is fit for a queen, and the queen works very hard to keep her Bedford home in tip-top shape and condition.

Born as Martha Helen Kostyra on Aug. 3, 1941, Stewart grew up in the state of New Jersey. Her family is of Polish descent, and she was raised Catholic. The influence her parents had on her as a young girl helped her later on in life with her extremely successful career. Stewart’s mother was the one who taught her how to cook and sew, while her father helped her develop a passion for gardening. Stewart also learned about the process of canning and preserving while visiting her grandparents in Buffalo, New York. Having this foundation from a young age, it is no surprise that Stewart turned into the home icon we all know and love today. It is also easy to see her family's taste reflected in her Bedford home.
She originally purchased the farmstead, which is a 156-acre property, in 2000. The estate doesn’t just have one home, but seven total to stay throughout the property. Not only does the beautiful Bedford estate have multiple places to stay but it is full of multiple gardens, horse stables and greenhouses.
The main home, where Stewart resides is called the “Winter House.” In 2021, the iconic homemaker let MTV into the house to be featured on “MTV Cribs.” Showcasing her beautiful home, Stewart let insiders into her glamorous yet quaint countryside abode. Throughout the tour, we got a glimpse at the outside of the main home, her kitchen that's suited for a chef, and her seating area which is also home to her bird cages.
In 2021 Stewart went into detail on her website, MarthaStewart.com about all of the hard work and detail that has gone into the estate. After spending a lot of time at home during the pandemic, she shared that her home needed a change.

"I realized my house was designed for entertaining, not for me," she shared. "I had two dining rooms I couldn't really use. I didn't have a comfortable place to sit and have breakfast. So Kevin Sharkey and I started reimagining and changing stuff," she added. Sharkey, who is the executive creative director for her business, shared, “Martha doesn't redecorate — she doesn't decorate either, really," he said. "It's always function first."
The dynamic duo worked hand in hand to bring her home up a notch and transform it into a place she had always dreamed of. After redoing several areas of the home, Stewart shared that when she's finished creating videos for work, she loves utilizing her space to relax. "After I've been working hard in the kitchen on videos, I love to go lie down on those fabulous new cushions and put my feet up," the icon shared.
Her power parlor, which was a dining room, is where the star can now sit and eat breakfast or take her endless zoom calls. "The velvet is a fabulous olive-y gold color," Stewart said. "My favorite," she added. She also loves to keep her timeless china out for her and her guests to adore. "Silver really brightens up a tabletop; it doesn't have to be fuddy-duddy," she said. "If your grandma gives you a beautiful set, use it,” she added.
From the big details all the way to the small details, Stewart shared that she loves every bit of her longtime home. "I never wear shoes in my house, and I love walking on that rug," she shared.
