Sep 21, 2018
Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina hard, but there are stories of heroism coming out of the tragedy. In one heartwarming tale, some heroic volunteers braved the storm to rescue six dogs. These dogs were stuck in locked cages, so they would have died without the help of the volunteers.
As the floodwaters started to rise, the dogs became nervous. They were barking and standing up on their hind legs as they tried to escape the floodwaters. The situation was becoming desperate for the poor dogs. Luckily, some volunteers appeared to rescue them. The six dogs were found on a property in Leland, North Carolina. When the hurricane struck, the owners quickly abandoned their home and their dogs to get away from the storm.

Six Dogs Get a New Chance at Life
In a post after the storm, one of the rescuers showed an amazing video of the volunteers. They also admonished all pet owners to take their pets with them during evacuations. The floodwaters get too high for the pets to survive. If these dogs had not been rescued, they would have drowned.
Ryan Nichols was one of the volunteers who saved the dogs. When he arrived, the dogs were whimpering in fear. As soon as he let the dogs out of the cage, they immediately swam to the rescuers.
On September 16, 2018, the floodwaters reached four feet high. They kept rising afterward, which made the area dangerous. Helicopters had to rescue 50 people who were stranded by the rising floodwaters. Another 26,000 people had to evacuate from their homes.
The storm might be less turbulent and windy than other hurricanes, but the floodwaters pose a huge risk. Even when the rainfall stopped, rising rivers posed another danger. This particular hurricane was dangerous because of the flooding risk.
Rods have been forced to close because of flash floods and landslides. The extra rainfall also means that bridges and dams could collapse. Thousands of National Guard troops arrived to help residents.
