Hugh Jackman Shares Photos Of Relaxing Beach Holiday Amid ‘Grueling’ Training Regimen To Play Wolverine

Apr 03, 2023

Since he had his Hollywood breakthrough in 2000, Hugh Jackman has become one of the most sought-after actors in the film industry, and rightly so. His versatility — from playing Wolverine to more dramatic and even musical roles — is a hallmark of Jackman's career, while his personable demeanor has made him a fan favorite.

Having portrayed the X-Men character Wolverine for over two decades, Jackman announced in January 2023 that he's reprising the role once more. In preparation for his return, Jackman is in the middle of training and bulking up, all of which he's shared on his social media channels. Ahead of going off to film the new installment, Jackman let his hair down on a well-deserved break in Costa Rica, where he enjoyed the sunshine, swimming in the sea and a few sunset drinks.

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Jackman is one of the biggest Australian actors in the world. He started in the entertainment industry as a theater actor in his native country, before he snagged the lead of Curly McLain in “Oklahoma!” at the West End Production of the show in London. He also starred in the television film of the same musical that featured one of their performances at the Royal National Theatre.

Theater holds a special place in Jackman’s heart — he was even recruited as the host of the Tony Awards for three consecutive years, starting from 2003 until 2005 — but it did not hold him back from pursuing Hollywood. When he bagged the role of Wolverine in 2000's “X-Men” it catapulted him to greater heights as it opened doors of opportunities to the then-relatively unknown actor.

Other notable roles of Jackman's include donning the gothic trenchcoat of Gabriel Van Helsing in the movie “Van Helsing,” as well as voicing the same character in the sequel "Van Helsing: The London Assignment," "Kate & Leopold," "The Prestige," "The Greatest Showman" and "Australia." Jackman also starred as Jean Valjean in the epic musical film "Les Misérables," for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

The star has gone on to have a successful career both commercially and critically. He has won a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, two Tony Awards and a Golden Globe Award, which means he is an Academy Award away from achieving the coveted EGOT status; the title is given to people who have won all four major American entertainment awards — Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

Audiences have loved Jackman in his many various roles but playing Wolverine/Logan has a special place in both the public and Jackman's hearts. So when the star began posting that he was "#BecomingWolverineAgain," naturally, there was excitement.

Jackman revealed in January 2023 that he'd begun six months of intense training in preparation for his role as Wolverine in "Deadpool 3." Later on in March, he shared details about his eating habits for his training. Alongside photos of prepared meals — each ranging from 1100 calories to a hefty 2100 calories — Jackman wrote:

"Bulking. A day in the life. Thank you Chef Mario for helping me stay healthy and properly fed whilst … Becoming. Wolverine. Again."

According to Healthline, men need approximately 2000 to 3000 calories a day in order to maintain their weight, which means Jackman is in the process of putting on large amounts of muscle for the role.

Fans expressed their excitement, as one wrote, "Sir, you never STOPPED being Wolverine."

Jackman appeared on "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?" and opened up a bit about his training regimen, as reported by Complex:

“I’ve learned you can’t rush it. I’ve learned that it takes time,” the star said about his physical transformation. “So we have six months from when I finish ("The Music Man" on Broadway) to when I (start) filming. And I’m not doing any other work. I’m going to be with my family and train. That’s going to be my job for six months.”

Jackman posted a video to social media that showed him heading into the ocean for a dip in rather cold conditions. "Sleep. Train. Eat. Recover. Repeat. #becomingwolverineagain," he wrote. Another video saw the actor working with his trainer, as he balanced a large disc on his back while in a dynamic plank.

It seems Jackman knows that after a lot of hard work, rest and relaxation are just as important in one's journey. In late March 2023, the star shared photos of his time in Costa Rica, where he managed to let his hair down, before getting back to his strict regimen.

Alongside gorgeous photos of the sea and rainforest, Jackman wrote, "Until next time Nosara! 🇨🇷" Nosara is a village and district on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. The star shared the same message on his Facebook as well as a few selfies. One depicted Jackman on the beach in front of a gorgeous sunset, while another appeared post-swim. In a third photo, Jackman was drinking fruit juice and seemed to be winding down.

One fan commented: "Grueling to become Wolverine! Everyone needs a cheat day!" Indeed!
