1. Florence, Italy
Florence is known as one of the great fashion cities of the world and offers lots of touristic wonders to travellers. The biggest tourist marvel though must be the outstanding 35 feet Colossus sculpture that stands over the Villa di Pratolino in Tuscany. It is known as the "Appennine Colossus" and was created by Flemish sculptor Giambologna in the 16th century.
The giant statue features a bearded man holding down a monster with one hand. The sheer size of this statue make it impressive enough, but the architectural marvel that went into it make it even more astounding. The inside of the tall statue features different grottos, rooms and walkways decorated with murals of men mining gem stones and even a large circular room up in the head. As of 2014, the Colossus is back on display and open for tourists after undergoing restoration work.
The Colossus featured all kinds of interesting little deatails and secrets. The rooms were not only built into the statue, but also the surrounding stone, with a few set deep into the earth. There was a room for a small orchestra to play in, even. The monster's head on the outside is connected to an underground stream and spews water into the lake the Colossus is watching over. Inside the room in his head, a fireplace could be lit so smoke would billow out his nose. Truly a marvel!
