Two of the royal family’s most stylish and beautiful women, Catherine, Princess of Wales and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are often compared. Among the most frequent ways the media does this is by judging their fashion choices side by side. Now, it appears that Meghan has taken a style cue from Catherine that suggests they may be far more similar than many believe.

On Oct. 5, 2024, Meghan attended a gala for the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. The duchess made a splash on the red carpet in a bright scarlet red, form-fitting gown featuring a low neckline. Meghan paired the striking dress with matching strappy heels but kept her make-up, accessories and hair – which she wore down in beachy waves – minimal. While her appearance caught the crowd's attention at the event to honor the hospital’s frontline staff, users online couldn’t help but feel that the dress seemed a bit off.

“If I was a person sponsoring this event, I would have escorted her out of this function, which is supporting children, wearing a dress like that. How inappropriate,” one user remarked, while another said, “...to children's gala. Very revealing dress. To children's gala.”

“Not an appropriate dress at a children's event,” a user echoed as yet another remarked on Meghan’s supposed fashion faux pas by saying, “Did she come straight from the beach.”

Meanwhile, one user posted a comment that linked Meghan’s red dress to Catherine’s white gown. The comment read:

“Nothing right about that!!!!! For a visit to a children's event – I don't think so. That dress was bad enough the first time!!!!!”

Read on to find out what Meghan’s dress has in common with Catherine’s and what it says about how the two royals choose to dress and present themselves.

In December 2019, for the BAFTAs, Princess Catherine stunned the fashion world by donning a resplendent white chiffon dress by Alexander McQueen. The single-shoulder gown featured lithe, Grecian drapes, floral embellishment on the strap and a cinched waist. With her hair done in an elegant updo and sparkling diamond accessories, Catherine looked like she had just stepped out of a fairy tale.

She shocked the fashion world again during the 2023 BAFTAs when she wore the dress again. Despite sustainability and climate change issues now at the forefront – and among the issues Catherine and her husband, Prince William, champion – recycling fashion looks for major events is still highly unusual. However, Catherine tweaked the dress, replacing the floral embellishment at the shoulder for simple drapery and added a touch of glam with some long velvet gloves and statement earrings.

Meghan took a page from Catherine in this respect and upcycled the red dress she wore to the 2024 hospital gala. Meghan had originally worn the Carolina Herrera dress while accompanying her husband, Prince Harry, at the Salute to Freedom gala in New York City. Back then, the dress featured a full train, which Meghan opted to discard, leaving just its form-fitting skirt with a high front slit in 2024.

Catherine and Meghan’s decisions to recycle their luxury dresses spoke to their ability to make bold, unconventional choices that align with their principles and the causes they support. While Catherine’s white gown appeared to have less of a controversial effect on the masses, Meghan’s fiery choice still had its fans.

“She looks lovely. The dress is gorgeous,” one user gushed.
