Heartbroken Dog Surrendered To Shelter With All His Bed And All His Toys

Nov 28, 2018

Surely anyone who says dogs don't have souls or emotions has never truly known a dog. Their body language, expressions and even their eyes alone speak volumes more than human words ever could. Meet Wall-E, a yellow lab mix whose entire world was suddenly turned upside down. Judging by the laid-back ears and heartbroken gaze in his photo, he's well aware of what just happened.

Wall-E's Story

During his early years, Wall-E lived a happy life. He had a nice, comfortable home with loving humans. By the age of five and at a weight of 50 pounds, he'd almost certainly never had to worry about where his next meal, drink of water or hug might come from. Signs of abuse or neglect weren't even remotely evident in his hardy physique or typical easygoing demeanor.

One day, though, life took an unexpected turn for Wall-E. His family's circumstances changed and they found themselves no longer able to take care of him. Not wanting to see him suffer or simply abandon him, they took the kindest and most responsible step they could: they surrendered him to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

How the Dreaded Day Unfolded

It was a typical day at MCACC; at least it was until Wall-E and his owners arrived. They'd packed up his bed, toys and other belongings to bring along with him. This obviously wasn't a simple case of no longer wanting the responsibilities of being a pet parent; in fact, Wall-E's humans were clearly devastated over having to give up their beloved fur baby.

They lingered there at the shelter with Wall-E as long as possible, crying and reluctant to say goodbye. Staff members of the MCACC felt their pain, some even sharing in the tears. Ultimately, they spent a few final moments with Wall-E and walked away.

An Uncertain Future

For the most part, families looking to adopt a dog are drawn more to cute, wiggly puppies, so fully grown dogs like Wall-E have a few odds stacked against them when they reach a shelter. MCACC's staff doesn't relish the though of euthanasia by any means, but as the second-largest shelter of its kind in the nation and certainly one facing serious overcrowding, it's sometimes the only option for them.

A Fitting End

Fortunately, some people aren't too blind to see the many advantages of adopting an adult dog who's potty trained and only too willing to give cuddles and kisses. Euthanasia was never really even an issue for Wall-E. MCACC quickly posted his picture on their "Adoptable Dogs" page, and dozens of people responded.

Wall-E's stint at the shelter wasn't a very long one. Only a day after his tale was told on the MCACC website, he made his grand exit. Lynn Lee sprang to action and gave him a new forever home. His newfound happiness is difficult to overlook in his post-adoption picture, yet more proof positive dogs have plenty of heart and soul.

In a cold world where unhappy endings come about far too often, this story veers off in a completely different direction. Be sure to spread word of Wall-E's heartwarming saga to anyone who could use a nice break from the norm.
