Groom Admits He 'Can't Overlook' His Brother's Actions That 'Ruined' His Wedding So He Fires Him As Payback

Sep 08, 2023

It is safe to say there is an unspoken rule widely accepted when it comes to weddings. This rule, directly and indirectly, indicates that the main attention during a wedding ceremony belongs to the bride and groom. From the bride being the only one rocking a white outfit to the couple receiving gifts, many people love to have their big day solely to themselves.

However, in recent times, people have become creative about staging proposals, and wedding ceremonies are now popular for such happenings. Not everyone might think it is appropriate when this occurs, especially the couple. In the case of Reddit user Daquii, not only was he upset when his brother popped the question to his partner during his wedding, but he took quick, drastic actions.

Daquii took to the AITA community in August 2023, where he asked for the opinions and thoughts of people about the situation. It turned out that the Redditor had fired his brother after he proposed at his wedding.

The original poster (OP) started his story by giving background information on what led to the situation of firing his brother. He revealed that he owns a plumbing company, and three years ago, he hired his brother to work in his company. The OP had hired his brother at the time because the latter, who was 22 years old at the time, became jobless after the pandemic.

The OP thought it was right to do as he loved his sibling. At the time the Redditor posted his story, he also revealed that his brother was looking forward to becoming a master plumber and starting his own business.

Although the siblings care about each other, the situation that led to OP's decision to fire his brother from his company happened at OP's wedding. The Redditor explained:

"At my wedding, in which he was the best man, he decided that during his speech he would give us all a big surprise and decided to propose to his long time girlfriend."

However, the OP and his newly wedded wife were not happy with his brother because of his actions. The man revealed the reason for being furious at his brother for doing what he did. He wrote:

"Me and my wife were appalled. We both feel like he stole the shine from our day. Everyone else in our families were so excited and kept taking pictures with her, looking at the ring, etc."

The Redditor was so displeased by his brother's action that the very next day he "decided to fire him." His brother was surprised by the decision because he did not see anything wrong in what he did. The OP continued to reveal that his brother "claims I'm being selfish and irrational, and our parents agree." The man wrote that his parents, who did not support his decision, said that "business should be separate from our personal lives."

OP said, "I just can’t overlook what he did and how he ruined our day." The Redditor also believed his decision to fire his brother was justified. However, he could not help sharing his story to seek people's opinions as he asked, "Am I overthinking this?"

In the post, the OP made some edits. In one of the edits in the post, he mentioned some things that he did not write in his main post. He shared:

"I should have mentioned this, but he will be getting severance. He is still my brother, and I wouldn't let him lose his home over this. But as a small business I can't imagine seeing him every day at work. Not now at least."

The response in the comment section came with mixed feelings as Redditors were divided. One user wrote, "Nta this case can't separate family and business because you only offered the job because he was family." Another user commented: "NTA. Seriously how many times does it have to be pointed out to people that you don't propose at another person's wedding? It's lame, tacky, and disrespectful to the couple who wanted you to share in THEIR special day; not share their special day with you."

A third user wrote: "ESH (Everyone Sucks Here). Him for hijacking your wedding day, you for being unprofessional and firing him." Someone echoed a similar sentiment as they wrote: "ESH. Yeah, what he did is really wrong, but fired your brother over this is just not reasonable." More people leaned into the ESH narrative as one person stated, “Your brother is an a** for doing that without seeking permission. Firing him was a really uncalled for reaction.”

After seeing people's comments about the situation, the OP thought to clarify some of their accusations that stated, "you've been looking for a reason to fire him" or "you're just jealous." The man clarified that there was no malice between them before the accident, as his brother was his best man.
