‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Actress Caterina Scorsone Rescued Her 3 Daughters But Lost 4 Pets In Devastating House Fire

Apr 05, 2023

Caterina Scorsone, best known for her role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd on "Grey's Anatomy," lost nearly all of her valuable possessions in a devastating house fire in January 2023 but she was able to quickly get her three daughters, Eliza, Pippa and Lucky, safely out of the house within minutes of the incident.

Scorsone revealed the tragedy she and her girls went through in an Instagram post on April 3, 2023, because she wanted to express her gratitude to everyone who helped and supported them after the fire. Scorsone recalled that she and her daughters were able to get out of the house in two minutes with "less than shoes on our feet," but sadly, they were not able to save their three cats and a dog.

The actress, who was born in Toronto, Canada in 1981, co-parents her daughters with ex-husband Rob Giles, a musician, whom she divorced in 2020. The ex-couple got married in 2009 and welcomed Eliza in 2012, Pippa in 2016, and Lucky in 2019.

Her first pregnancy was written into the storyline of "Private Practice," the spinoff to "Grey's Anatomy," while her last pregnancy was part of the story arc for her character in "Grey's Anatomy" season 16.

Scorsone is an advocate for kids with Down syndrome because of Pippa. In 2020, she wrote a piece on Good Morning America detailing her life with a child with a disability and how her daughter will need equity as she gets older.

The TV doctor has been part of the long-running medical hit drama since her introduction to the series in 2010. She has been in more than 200 episodes and has also played the same role in "Station 19," the other spinoff centered on firefighters and first responders.

Scorsone's lengthy post about the house fire was about giving thanks to her neighbors, the parents and the school community of her kids, the firefighters and investigators, as well as her "Grey's Anatomy" family. The actress said that if there was one thing she learned from this tragedy it's that what matters most is "the people (and beings) that you love."

However, Scorsone said that despite her gratitude for escaping a tragic house fire, she and her daughters are still grieving their pets. The actress shared several photos of their cats and dog in the Instagram post.

"Heartbreakingly, we lost all four of our pets," Scorsone said. "We are still sitting with that loss, but we are lucky we got to love them at all."

The Pasadena Fire Department acknowledged Scorsone for jumping into action, which saved her children's lives.

"The reason this family is alive is because of the actions and decisions that Ms. Scorsone made on that cold night," the press release stated. "This is a testament to incredible decision-making and the motherly instinct taking over."

Following her post on social media, Scorsone received much love from her fans and her "Grey's Anatomy" co-stars. Jake Borelli, who is Dr. Levi Schmitt on the show, wrote in the comments that Scorsone is "truly an incredible human. Camilla Luddington, who portrays Dr. Jo Wilson, said that Scorsone is so loved and such an incredible and inspiring mother.

"I hope I never have to deal with anything like this," Chris Carmack or Dr. Atticus London wrote, per E! News. "But if I do, I hope I can follow your example of grace under terrible circumstances...love to you and the family."
