Grandfather Slammed As 'Entitled' After Insisting On Seeing His Newborn Grandchild

Jun 27, 2023

Welcoming a new baby into the family sends everyone in a giddy state, especially grandparents. The very fact that you will be seeing your offspring's offspring can give one such delight and joy. However, in some cases, many new parents, especially young ones, can be misunderstood how excited such grandparents are for their children.

In the Original Poster's (OP) case, he seemed to have riled up the internet after expressing entitlement to seeing his grandchild. Taking to the Am I The Assh*le Thread on Reddit, OP, 42, revealed that his son, 18, had a child with her girlfriend of the same age. Upon immediately knowing that the mother was pregnant on her side of the family, she was thrown out.

OP then housed the young couple and decided to help them get on their feet. The two eventually had their own place after living in his house for quite some time.

"I am extremely proud of them. We had a room set up for the baby, but since they got their own place, I let them take all the baby items I purchased. I mean a fully furnished nursery, and then of course everything from the shower – that baby isn't going to be wanting for much," he told the thread.

Sadly, the baby was breech, which resulted in her Daughter in Law (DIL) having a C-section. Because of this dangerous predicament, OP took a day off from work and offered to drive the couple to the hospital, where he met surprising hostility from his son. When he asked if he could be in the hospital to wait, his DIL said they would not be allowed visitors, which got OP pretty taken aback.

Met with such hostility from asking to stay in the hospital to wait, OP reflected on the help he gave the young couple.

"I'll admit I was pretty taken aback – I mean, I feel like as the grandparent, I'm closer than the aunt – but whatever," OP said, referring to DIL's sister, who was only allowed to stay. "I said okay because I didn't want to fight, and said I would be waiting at their house,"

Upon hearing that OP would be waiting at the house for them to arrive, the DIL dismissed him, saying that she wouldn't allow him to because she would be in pain, bleeding, and breastfeeding because of the emergency operation. Besides that, DIL also said that OP has not TDAP booster shot which would be crucial to the newborn's safety.

"Lots of other things were said, and I feel extremely taken advantage of. I sheltered and provided for her and my son and I didn't have to - plus I gifted them a lot. I now see a lot of other narc tendencies from her, and I feel like its WWIII with my poor boy caught in the middle," he posted, mulling if he was in the wrong.

Redditors gave their piece of mind on the matter:

"YTA. No one is entitled to a child especially if your not the parent. While yes everything you did was wonderful it doesn't matter right now. ," a user commented

"YTA. She is going to be recovering from surgery. If she doesn't want visitors, respect it. You'll see the baby when she's up for visitors," someone said

"You should of warned them your "generosity" came with a lot of strings attached. How about you show this new-to-be mom some respect and privacy while recovering from a life-altering event? YTA," another echoed
