Get Ready To Serve Up Halloween Spirit With These Must-Have Pumpkin Dishes

‘Tis the season. No, not that season, but the season for tricks and treats. So why not get into the spirit (hah!) of things by quickly transforming flower pots—used or new—into fabulously cute Halloween decorations? Take these Clay Pumpkin Jars, for example. Do them up big or small—or better yet, do a variety—to create your own indoor “pumpkin patch.”

We’re talking your pumpkins, done your way. Add bling or ribbons, silk leaves or lace. Paint them up with ghoulish or silly grins and attach the stem of your choice. It’s time to set your inner artist free!

Pump up the jars’ pumpkin-ness by painting slightly darker vertical “seam” lines. Wooden knobs or teeny clay pots painted brown or green make dandy stems, once you glue them to the bottom of a pot’s matching terra cotta saucer.

Then again, you don't actually need the saucers. Flip the pot upside down, attach a stem-sized stick, painted if you like, maybe festooned with Halloween-themed ribbon. Cut eyes and mouths from black felt, and glue on a face. Granted, upside down pumpkins can’t hold candy, but making them will be fun and give your kids a Halloween craft kick they’re sure to remember.

We can suggest a list of supplies for this project, but you’ll probably want to add a few ideas of your own. This is, after all, your pumpkin patch.

• Clay flower pots and matching saucers
• Orange, brown, and green acrylic paint
• Glue
• Wooden knobs and tiny, stem-sized flower pots
• Paintbrush
• Twine
• Candy corn

1. Paint your stuff. Do the clay pots and saucers orange, and the wooden knobs brown (or green). Let your pumpkin parts dry.
2. Glue whatever stem you’ve chosen to the bottom of the saucer/lid, or, if you’re creating an upside-down pumpkin, glue your stick to the bottom of the pot. Let the glue dry.
3. Tie twine around the stem, and, if you’re feeling particularly artistic, attach some ribbon or silk leaves.
4. Stock your pumpkin jars with candy corn, and ... Yum!
