Food Delivery Driver Slammed For Cussing At Customer Who Gave $5 Tip On A $20 Pizza Order

Jul 07, 2023

For some jobs, people are expected to leave a tip for the worker. This is typically done for occupations in the service industry or artistic worlds, such as hairdressers, artists, delivery drivers, waitresses and so on. The workers in these fields usually don’t make much money and therefore rely on these tips to help them get by and to pay their everyday needs along with all of their bills.

This system certainly has its flaws, though, as not everyone believes in tipping generously — or at all. Tipping culture in America is pretty controversial. A 20% tip is the new standard.

But despite the system and conventions being set out in society today, tipping is and has always been optional. In the case of one pizza delivery driver, he felt that he should have gotten a larger tip than he received when he delivered a customer’s order.

In a now-trending video on social media, a delivery driver made the internet furious over his actions and words. The video footage was obtained from a door camera at the house of Lacy Purciful.

As the driver pressed the bell, Purciful immediately got out and received the order. As soon as the driver handed over the order, he went on to speak his mind.

“I just wanna say, It’s a nice house for a $5 tip,” he candidly told Purciful, who then responded with a “you’re welcome.” However, the driver shouted some expletives back to the customer.

Many were appalled by the rude behavior of the driver, which is why the video trended on social media.

In the same TikTok post, Purciful asked the public how much should she be tipping for a $20 order, to which people responded that it was just fair to tip him $5.

“Tipping is out of control. 5 on 20 is more than enough,” a user shared, as per Today

“Tips used to be for exceptional service. We need to stop calling it a tip and call it for what it is, a low-wage supplement fee,” another commented on a video of the encounter.

Meanwhile, the company which hosted the delivery driver, DoorDash, confirmed in a statement that the driver had been removed from the platform.

“Respectfully asking for a tip is acceptable but abusing or harassing someone is never acceptable,” DoorDash said in a statement as quoted by CBS 42. “We’ve removed this Dasher from our platform and reached out to the customer.”

Speaking to Inside Edition, Purciful reflected on the interaction between her and the rude delivery driver.

“I still tip and I’m still doing the right thing and yet still be treated that I should be doing more because where I am in life?” she told the outlet. “If you didn’t like it, then I’m sorry, then maybe find a different job that pays more.”

NBC News Investigative and Consumer Correspondent Vickie Wang said in a conversation with Hallie Jackson that CreditCard.com published a survey revealing Americans to be “less generous” than people were before the pandemic and “even less generous” than people were in 2019. Wang pointed out that the reason for this decline in tipping was probably because of inflation across the country.
