Foal Going To Be Put Down Because He Can't Be Racehorse — But Woman Becomes Part Of His Life

Jun 20, 2020

The Last Chance Corral in Athens, OH, is a place where baby horses who don't make the cut to become racehorses can find a new chance at living a happy life as part of a family. Victoria Goss, who founded the organization, has rescued over 150 foals since she established the horse rescue program in 1991.

Most people have heard of “puppy mills," but many are unaware that the same kind of mistreatment happens in the horse breeding industry, especially when it comes to breeding racehorses. The majority of horses do not have what it takes to be a racehorse, and unfortunately, many of them are tossed aside to be forgotten or worse, as The Washington Post reports. It seems that to some breeders, making money takes precedence over the animals in their care.

Victoria Goss has taken it upon herself to do something kind for those foals that get left behind. She started the Last Chance Corral, a place where foals who were neglected, abandoned, or soon to be put down can be given a new life. Here is where the baby foals will be nursed back to health, and where they will wait to be adopted by a family who is eager to love and care for them, as The Post reports. On Last Chance Corral's website, Goss has listed some requirements for hopeful adoptees, to ensure that these baby foals get the care they need. These include having previously owned a horse to ensure that the new owner knows how to care for one, and having a veterinarian that the new owner will be seeing regularly as part of the horse’s care “team."

While it’s very sad and disappointing that breeding rings continue to thrive at the expense of innocent baby foals, it’s good to know that there are people like Victoria Goss to step in and help them. Perhaps a way for others to help with situations like this is to consider adopting a rescue before buying from a breeder.
