Family Adopts 82-Year-Old Widower As 'Honorary Grandpa' Who Visits All The Time

A young family from Rhode Island, who was new in the neighborhood, has embraced an 82-year-old neighbor as an "honorary grandpa.” The Caraballo family, consisting of Sharaine and Wilson and their six children, moved to Pawtucket in March 2022, where they had the fortune of meeting Paul Callahan.

Callahan, a retired Texas Instruments manager, had lost his wife six months prior to the Caraballos' arrival in the community. The initial encounter between Callahan and Wilson occurred when the widower kindly offered his ladder to assist the father-of-six with his household tasks. A friendship quickly blossomed, and the Caraballos found solace and companionship in the elderly man's presence.

According to Sharaine, 32, her family and Callahan clicked from the start, so they welcomed the fact that he often came over to the house to lend his tools to his new neighbors. He began spending a lot of time at their house to teach her husband how to fix stuff, thus, he also became familiar with their six children, per SWNS.

Prior to their moving in, Sharaine admitted that she initially had some concerns about meeting their new neighbors. However, those anxieties were dispelled when Callahan warmly welcomed them.

Soon, Callahan came by their house more regularly and also started joining the family for their backyard cookouts, as well as holiday celebrations. His connection with the kids also deepened, and they have learned to love spending time with their "Uncle Paul." 

To reciprocate how much the family has embraced the old man, Callahan also often brings small gifts to the children. Aside from having conversations with Wilson and Shariane, the 82-year-old sits down with the kids to captivate them with his storytelling. 

"He was coming over with tools. He'd bring screwdrivers and teach Wilson how to fix up the garage, and Wilson followed all his advice," Sharaine shared. Recognizing the special bond they have formed, she affectionately referred to Callahan as an "honorary grandpa."

"When Paul welcomed us into the neighborhood, I knew I had made the right choice,” Sharaine added, per the New York Post, after admitting her apprehensions about being new to the community. She feared the neighbors at first because she didn’t have any idea what they were like until they met Callahan.

In June 2023, when America celebrated Father’s Day, the Caraballos presented Callahan with a new outfit, symbolizing the profound impact he had had on their lives. Sharaine explained that her husband's father resides in the Dominican Republic, so Callahan has become a father figure to Wilson in his absence. Even Wilson's mother affectionately calls him "dad."

The Caraballos' love and support have been reciprocated by their elderly neighbor, who considers their home a sanctuary where he can find solace and connection. Sharaine believes her family played a crucial role in helping the widower cope with the loss of his wife. 

Sharaine said he asked Callahan what specifically drew him to the family, and he said that he grew up in a home where there were a lot of kids. He loved the feel of a house where family members hang out. Being the youngest, Callahan’s loved ones passed away before him.  

Through their actions, the Caraballo family has exemplified the power of reaching out and embracing our neighbors, particularly those who may be feeling isolated or alone. Their simple act of kindness has created a strong bond, transforming their neighbor into an extended family member, an honorary grandpa who brings joy, companionship, and a sense of belonging to all their lives.
