If you look among the dozens of homeopathic remedies stacked on the shelves of organic pharmacies, you will find a long wooden brush that is the favorite item of Margo Marrone, founder of the Organic Pharmacy in New York City.

This brush, she says, is perfect for those who need help with skin issues and especially for someone trying to detox. However, users shouldn’t just save skin brushing for times they are detoxing, as it has many advantages that cannot be overlooked.

Marrone says that by brushing your skin one or two times a day with a soft, firm brush, you will incur many skin and body changes. Skin brushing can lead to an improved skin appearance, digestion support, and more. As you sweep away dead skin cells you will be improving your overall appearance.

What does skin brushing accomplish? Marrone says that it helps to stimulate your lymphatic system, the part of the body responsible for the collection and transportation of waste to the blood. When you dry brush your skin you stimulate your system.

The company suggests their 10-day detox program along with skin brushing, although Marrone says that everyone should incorporate it into their daily routine for maximum benefits.

Using a long brush will allow you to get to harder-to-reach spots, such as your back. Choose one that allows you to get all areas of your body, that fits perfectly in your hand.

Experts typically recommend dry brushing in the morning as it has energizing qualities. While some individuals use the brush by itself, others may use a small amount of oil on the brush. Marrone recommends that if you are using oil to shower before you perform a skin brushing. If no oil is used, brush your skin and then shower to get rid of any dead skin cells.

To start, begin with your feet and work your way towards your heart. Then start with your hands and work towards your shoulders. Work in a circular motion or brush with small, firm strokes. A counterclockwise motion should be used on your stomach.

Do not press too hard- you don’t want to break the skin. Choose a brush with medium-soft bristles for best results. Allow at least three to five minutes for skin brushing. Marrone also says that regular skin brushing can help smooth the appearance of any cellulite you may have.
