Dolly Parton Gushes About Friendship With Cher Alongside Sweet Throwback Photo

Jul 31, 2023

When it comes to country music royalty, Dolly Parton is easily one of the most iconic names in the business. Known for her impeccable songwriting skills and unique singing voice, Parton has been a huge influence on the music industry for decades with hits such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors.” She also penned and originally recorded “I Will Always Love You” in 1973 before it was later made famous by vocal powerhouse Whitney Houston in 1992.

Along with being a singer and songwriter, Parton is also best known for her work as an actress, author, businesswoman and humanitarian. She has been a pivotal figure in the industry for more than five decades, with her debut album, “Hello, I’m Dolly,” being released in 1967. With so much time in the spotlight, Parton has become a role model to many, as she has always made an effort to make a positive impact on the world with both her music and her personal actions.

Born on Jan. 19, 1946, Parton was raised in Tennessee and was the fourth of 12 children, and grew up poor. However, she had a real passion for music and moved to Nashville the day after she graduated from high school, embarking on what would become a lifelong career.

Aside from being a successful musician, Parton is also known for her humanitarian work. In 2021, she became People’s People of the Year for her philanthropic contributions and her overall state as a true icon, both professionally and through her good deeds.

In July 2022, Parton wowed fans after she shared a throwback photo of herself alongside one of her greatest friends in the industry, Cher. Before we dive into their iconic photograph, let’s take a look at the musician’s life.

Cher has dominated the music industry with her definable voice and her beautiful stage presence for several decades, taking center stage in a number of film productions as well. Some of her biggest hits include “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.” She also was famously linked to her musical partner and former real-life husband Sonny Bono from the duo Sonny & Cher.

In the black-and-white snap that Parton shared with her followers, the pair could be seen smiling towards the camera.

According to IMDb, the image was from the singer’s TV Show “Cher… Special” in 1978.

“It’s hard to top a friend like Cher!” the country musician wrote.

After the photo was shared on the social media platform, fans took to the comment section to gush over the two best friends.

“You two look beautiful in this picture. Wow!” one wrote

“Two amazing women, showing us all how we should be, thank you both,” another one wrote

One user even requested that Parton should be the way Cher gets nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as the country star was inducted in 2022.

“Now that you're in the @rockhall I hope you can use your influence to get Cher nominated. She's the biggest and most egregious snub still not in,” one tweeted.

This was not the first time the two legendary singers interacted online as Cher also greeted Parton on her birthday in 2020.

“Happy (birthday) dear, beautiful, talented, friend. You are an American icon and I’ve admired you since the day I met you at Sandy’s,” the “Believe” songstress wrote.

The year prior, the country singer shared a video greeting for her dear friend whom she had been friends with for decades.

“I just want you to know that I’m proud of you, I think you’re great. Hope you’ll be around for a hundred more years to hang out with me, if nothing else. Just know that I will always love you,” she said

According to American Songwriter, both musicians have a lot in common with each other. Both singers were born in the same year, 1946, and they are only months apart in age.

They also have numerous awards individually, which include the ever-prestigious Grammy Awards. It only proves that the powerhouse friendship they have also revolves around their unique talents.

In an old video from “Cher… Special,” originally aired in the '70s, Cher noted that she and Parton have been friends for a “long time,” but the strange thing about their friendship is that they “hardly ever get a chance to talk.”

At the end of the clip, the singer assured Parton that she would always have a friend in her.

“Well, Doll, when all is said and done, you’ve got a friend,” Cher said, to which Parton asked, “winter, spring, summer, or fall?”

Cher replied, “all you gotta do is call.” They concluded the chit-chat by telling each other, “I got you, babe.”
