Disabled Duck Finally Takes First Steps With A Custom Designed Wheelchair

Apr 04, 2019

You may not have thought about the fact that an animal can have a crippling disability.

Some animals are born with defects resulting in paralysis. You are about to read a true story about a duck that was born with a defect. The duck could not walk because of a problem that affected its left leg.

People who cannot walk are able to use wheelchairs for mobility. Now, thanks to modern technological advances, disabled ducks, along with other creatures, can reap the same benefits.

Adopted by the Goats of Anarchy sanctuary located in Annandale, New Jersey, Merlin the duck became an official member in November 2018, according to The Daily Mail. An employee at the sanctuary contacted Walkin' Pets in Amherst, New Hampshire.

Walkin' Pets specializes in fitting disabled animals with wheelchairs. Although the wheelchairs were primarily designed for dogs and cats, technicians found a way to modify a mini-wheelchair for Merlin the duck.

Founder Mark Robinson told the Daily Mail:

'I was thrilled my company was able to help a handicapped duck, our first one ever.'

Merlin received the wheelchair in February 2019 and was finally able to waddle like a duck. Mikayla Feehan took a video of Merlin using the wheelchair. Mikayla is a social media coordinator at Walkin' Pets.

She mentioned that it was a fun experience watching Merlin waddle with the help of its new wheelchair.

She said that it is unusual to watch a duck using a wheelchair. She also mentioned that it was a heartwarming experience watching a tiny duck walk for the first time. Walkin' Pets has manufactured more than 50,000 wheelchairs used by animals across the globe.
