Daughter & Dad Discover Family Secret While Gathering ‘Mean’ Grandma’s Belongings From Basement

Grandmothers are often known for being kind to their grandchildren as they typically ensure their safety, making sure that they are being well-fed and well-taken care of. However, not everyone had the same experience because, unfortunately, as time goes by, some grandparents’ sweetness fades into nothingness.

This is what happened to a user 827800 who shared a shocking story in the FamilySecrets thread on Reddit. Not only did she reveal her grandmother’s attitude toward them, but also a discovery that she and her dad found when they went through her stuff.

The original poster (OP) began the story by sharing that she never liked her grandmother because of how she treated her as she was “really mean” and had said “all sorts of hurtful things” about her parents.

When she saw the grandma’s true colors, OP stopped hanging out with her and even cut all forms of communication like calling and texting.

Ten years later, the grandma went on to live with one of her children in the United Kingdom. OP's aunt called her brother (the user’s dad) to let him know that the old lady wanted to live there permanently and asked if they could pack up her things and ship them over there.

The father didn’t hesitate and decided to visit the house where the grandma used to live despite it being far away from where they reside. OP decided to tag along as she was home for a break.

Ever since he was a kid, the father never got the chance to see what lies beneath the basement of the house, so he decided to break the lock.

Initially, the basement looked innocent as OP described it as “surprisingly neat,” and the dust was not too overwhelming.

The two started opening boxes, and the dad found some old books. OP then found a brown trunk and decided to look at what was inside.

She found old images of her grandma along with her late husband, who passed away before OP was born. In the photos, both of the grandparents were wearing what “looked like a defence uniform but not Indian.”

OP decided to dig more and found a couple of other photos that featured several people wearing the same exact uniform and “standing in some hilly region.” The dad told them that his father used to work for the Indian army.

Later on, OP said she pointed to a symbol in the photographs and asked if the army was responsible for putting those.

To her surprise, the dad was shocked, as she wrote, “When he saw the photos his smile dropped and his face seemed grim.”

It appeared that the two were curious to get to know more about their discovery, so the father looked for other photos and opened another trunk. She later found a small box that contained files that were sealed.

“He tore open the files and as I saw the contents I was shocked. It was my father's and his sibling's birth certificates,” OP wrote, and explained that the father had three other siblings.

What’s more shocking about the files she discovered was that the name of the father in the birth certificate as it wasn’t the name of their grandfather.

“What was even more shocking was none of them shared the same father except for the oldest of them all,” she added.

Aside from their first discovery, she also found out that the birth locations in the files of the four siblings were different, and it revealed that they were not born in India, and the user’s father was born in Russia. He told his child that he didn’t remember such a thing.

The duo decided not to go home yet and opened the remaining trunks, and there they found transaction documents for different currencies. She took photos and sent them to someone who had knowledge about the files.

“I was there and saw the look on the man's face when he told my father that those uniform were old Soviet uniforms but that was not the worst part. The uniform my grandmother was wearing was not russian at all, it was Chinese,” OP added.

It was later confirmed that the dad wasn’t born in India, as well as his siblings, except for the eldest one.

Since they wanted to find out more information, they decided to go back to the house to search more boxes and trunks, and they found more files and documents.

She later found a locker, and there were more documents “that made the situation seem even more weird.”

They assumed that the grandmother was a spy sent by the KGB back in the day and was never a teacher like they thought she was; even her name and nationality were different, as she wrote, “It is being assumed that she was one of the many spies put out by kgb in India.”

Her grandmother later found out what they discovered and suffered from “a massive heart attack.” At the time when she shared the post, which was in 2019, the elderly woman had yet to regain consciousness.
