Jun 02, 2020
Ice dancing is one of the most popular events at the Winter Olympics. It's less technical and more artistic than pairs figure skating. Ice dancing takes its inspiration from ballroom and other forms of dance, and it shows. Over the years, some of the Games' most memorable events, like Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's gold medal, have come courtesy of this event. In more recent years, Canada's Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue have been one of the premier ice dancing pairs in the world.
A Winning Combination
It has been hard for audiences to accept that Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue aren't a romantic pair off the ice, but that's the truth. In fact, Moir got engaged to someone else in 2019. However, Moir and Virtue's routines have always been very romantic. It's speculated that they like to play up that tension to get the audience more involved. Ice dancing is supposed to be less technical than figure skating. There's room for plenty of emotions in this event. Moir and Virtue's artistry is one reason they've captured so many gold medals.

Moir and Virtue chose Ed Sheeran's song "Perfect" for one of their final routines together. Their movements together fit that song perfectly. The tender, intuitive way they interact together testifies to the closeness of their relationship and their trust for one another. One thing they've always been known for is their unique lifts. Instead of Scott picking Tessa up, often she is balancing on him by placing her knee and ankle on his back and thigh. Trust is very important when it comes to these kinds of moves. After all, their skates are sharp.
Saying Goodbye to the Sport
In 2019, after over 22 years as a team, Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue announced their retirement from competitive ice dancing. Fans of the sport will definitely be sad to see them go. It's hard to imagine that another pair will come along and replicate this duo's chemistry any time soon. They were a truly unique and well-matched duo.
