Catherine Zeta-Jones Reveals Her Attitude Towards Aging As A Woman In Her 50s
Jan 02, 2023
Famously known for portraying the sultry and sexy Velma Kelly on "Chicago," Catherine Zeta-Jones is one of the most prominent Welsh-born actresses who made it big in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Zeta-Jones was born in September 1969 in Wales. She grew up with humble beginnings with a father who ran a sweets factory and a mother who was a seamstress. While attending school, Zeta-Jones starred in school productions at a very young age. Eventually, she won a local junior talent competition that gained her some recognition. She often traveled to London as a part of a young girl's dance group, and she even won a national tap dancing competition in her early teen years.
At the young age of 15, she decided to leave school full-time to follow her dreams of becoming an actress. She moved to London, where her hard work paid off, and she eventually got the film debut she was hoping for. In 1990 she debuted in "1001 Nights," which kicked off her long-standing acting career. Since then, she has played endless roles.
In the early 1990s, Zeta-Jones soared to fame in the United Kingdom in "The Darling Buds of May," a period drama in which she played the Larkin family's eldest daughter, Mariette Charlton. Although she might not have been widely known within the United States at the time, by the end of the decade, she made a big impression there with her sword-wielding starring role (which required massive skills) in "The Mask of Zorro."
Last November 2022, Zeta-Jones played the iconic role of the Addams matriarch, Morticia Adams, on "Wednesday," a series based on the Addams Family characters. Speaking more to In Style Magazine, the Award-winning actress reveals how she still feels empowered and beautiful at this point in her life.
Zeta-Jones and Douglas continue to have one of the longest-lasting marriages in Hollywood, given that they have been together for more than two decades. And although they have a significant age gap of 25 years, the couple has shown that age is nothing but a number between two adults who choose to love and cherish each other for life.
Zeta-Jones gained massive popularity during the 2000s; she was booked and busy, starring in back-to-back films every year: "Intolerable Cruelty," "Ocean's Twelve," and "The Terminal," among many others. After such, she worked intermittently in between films and Broadway. It was only last 2022 when she was cast in "Wednesday" as the lovable and eccentric mother, Morticia Adams, previously played by Carolyn Jones and Anjelica Huston in the older and other versions of the character.
Despite being hailed as the No. 1 Most Beautiful People in 1998 by People Magazine, Zeta-Jones, like any other woman, still has to put on a brave face and experience being insecure once in a while.
"When I read a script and the character's description has the prefix of 'beautiful, stunning, gorgeous', it's always intimidating. Personally, I would never consider myself a great beauty but my mother always told me to make the best of myself," she told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2021.
However, she pointed out that later on, aging played a huge role in how she looks at herself right now.
"There's a confidence I've sometimes had to put on when I walk down a red carpet. I have my insecurities like every other woman. But as I've got older, I've got much more confident about the way I look," she revealed.

Being beautiful is also feeling beautiful inside and out, and for Zeta-Jones, if science can help you feel that – then she's up for it!
"I am all for whatever makes you happy," she said to The Sydney Morning Herald. "There are so many treatments now that don't make you look like you've just stepped off Mars, so it goes back to self-confidence. An inner confidence is very empowering for women. Whatever that takes, do it."
In an interview with InStyle Magazine, Zeta-Jones candidly echoed her idea of being more confidently beautiful as she aged.
"Something about getting older was that I don't take a lot of sh*t from people. Not that I'm snappy, or that I'm looking for sh*t from people. I just don't take it, and I don't take it in a very gracious way. And it's only something that comes from experience and it's only something that comes from being 53."
Aside from being and feeling beautiful, Zeta-Jones also expressed a sense of hope for the next phase of her career.
"But I really feel now that there's a different chapter ahead of me, and it's exciting to see what happens next. My dreams have come true, and everything else now is a bonus for me," she told the publication.
Apart from being on "Wednesday," which was confirmed to have a Season 2 after its colossal hit worldwide on Netflix, Zeta-Jones also starred as the ruthless black market antiquities dealer Billie in the Disney+ Original Series "National Treasure: Edge of History," along with Harvey Keitel, and Justin Bartha, from the original "National Treasure" film series.
