Carrie, Charlotte And Miranda Are Back — Take A First Look At The New 'Sex And The City' Series
Jul 12, 2021
The show "Sex and the City" was a landmark moment for female characters on television. Following the lives of four friends in Manhattan, New York, the HBO series broke new ground in the way that it depicted women in their 30s looking for love but who weren't afraid of having a fun time while they did it.
"Sex and the City" propelled its four lead actresses to the top of Hollywood's A-list and after six seasons and two movies, it bid farewell to its beloved characters — Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York.
That was until the beginning of this year when rumors that had circulated for years of a new installment came true — "Sex and the City" would be making a comeback! Titled "And Just Like That...", the new installment of the show will be returning to HBO, this time premiering on HBO Max, and will come in the form of a limited 10-episode series.
Fans have been ecstatic since the news was revealed, however, there is one major aspect that won't be the same — Kim Cattrall, who played Jones, won't be joining the cast, following what appears to be a decade-long feud between her and Parker.
A short video promo for "And Just Like That..." was released back in January, but besides Parker's iconic voiceover, there was no footage of the characters. Instead, the video short featured the show's arguably fifth main character — New York City.
Now, HBO has released the first official image of the remaining three main characters and it's bringing back all sorts of nostalgia mixed with sheer excitement. Let's take a look at the first peek of "And Just Like That...."
The first image of the now-three central characters of the "Sex and the City" reboot "And Just Like That..." shows the three leads — Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon, and Charlotte York, played by Kristin Davis — strolling on the sidewalk of Manhattan. Considering it's been 17 years since the show's finale and nearly 10 years since the second movie was released, it's no surprise that they all look a little bit different. However, each of the three exudes the same characteristic qualities of the women they play, albeit a little more grown-up.
Bradshaw, who's front and center, still has a fashion-forward outfit on, complete with sky-high stilettos; Hobbes is nailing her usual menswear-influenced tailoring, which appears in softer tones of white, cream and grey; and York is her prim and proper self, down to her ubiquitous pencil skirt. The characters are now in their 50s and they all look fantastic!
Returning alongside the three women will be many of the show's notable male characters including Mr. Big, who's played by Chris Noth, York's husband Harry Goldenblatt, played by Evan Handler, Hobbes' husband Steve Brady, played by David Eigenberg, and even Bradshaw's one-time fiancé, Aidan Shaw, played by John Corbett.
But to the dismay of fans everywhere, Kim Cattrall will not be reprising her role as PR aficionado Samantha Jones. After a few very public exchanges between Cattrall and Bradshaw, the duo's decades-long feud was seemingly confirmed. Nevertheless, Jones is a beloved character from the original series and fans are interested to see how they'll fill that void in the reboot.

Once it was confirmed that Cattrall wouldn't be returning, rumors were rife that the series' producers would kill off her character. But HBO executive Casey Bloys put these rumors to rest when he told TVLine earlier this year that the character wouldn't be recast and would simply be written out of the storyline instead. Speaking with the publication, Bloys stated:
“Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life…"
He continued, revealing a bit about the reboot's focus:
"They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”
For longtime fans, it is consoling to know that the show's producers likely won't tarnish Jones' reputation in the show, as despite not being the central character, she was probably the fans' favorite.
This first official look comes after a short and rather ambiguous teaser trailer was shared by the three leads via their social media channels in January. In the short video, Parker says one of her recurring lines from the show, "And Just Like That..." — which went on to inspire the reboot's title — while shots of iconic New York City landmarks can be seen, including the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and more. For now, there's no word on when the series will air, however, production began in June.
