Britney Spears’ Father Jamie Spears Has Agreed To Step Down From Conservatorship
Aug 13, 2021
In a major win for Britney Spears, her father Jamie Spears has agreed that he would "step down" as her conservator "when the time is right," according to court documents filed on August 12, 2021. This is an incredible development seeing as how Jamie had refused to step down from his role as a conservator just a month prior. Britney's case, which had been stalled for a long time, took a turn when she was granted the right to hire her own attorney in July 2021.
Like many celebrities who have felt the glare of fame from a young age, Britney Spears went through a tumultuous time in the late 2000s. Constantly being plagued by cameras and paparazzi aren't easy to manage no matter how experienced you are, but Britney was overcome by the difficulties as she was not only one of the world's biggest pop stars but also a young mother at the time. Her public "breakdown" in 2007 made her an object of public scrutiny for years.
Her erratic behavior also led to her father becoming her legal conservator. A conservatorship is usually granted for individuals who are unable to make their own decisions, like those with dementia or other mental illnesses — and Britney's father, Jamie Spears, has essentially managed her life and finances for more than 13 years.
With the release of the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" in Feb. 2021 and the ongoing "Free Britney" movement, Britney's case has become extremely important today. The ongoing court battle continues to be in the news, with updates arriving very frequently at this point.
CBS News reported that according to court documents filed on Thursday, Jamie said that he would be willing to step down.
"Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition needs to be orderly and include a resolution of matters pending before the Court," the filing stated.
It continued, "There is no doubt that the Conservatorship saved Ms. Spears from disaster, supported her when she needed it the most, protected her and her reputation from harm, and facilitated the restoration of her career." Jamie's lawyers also made it a point to insist that Jamie continues to be "the best choice" to oversee the conservatorship and that he is only willing to step down because he wants to avoid a "public feud" in Britney's best interest.
"Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests," the filing added.
Britney's lawyer Mathew Rosengart also responded to the court filing and released his own statement, "We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed," and added, "It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others."
Lynne Spears's lawyer Gladstone Jones also released a statement, which read, "Lynne Spears, Britney's mother, is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down. Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost 3 years ago," Jones said in a statement. "She has accomplished what she set out to do."

This is certainly a major win for Britney in her ongoing legal case against her father, which has gained a lot of attention. For the first time in a long time, Britney spoke out against her father and the state of her conservatorship in a shocking court appearance in June 2021.
During her 24-minute-long testimony, she accused her conservators of forcing her to perform against her will, making her take mood-stabilizing drugs, and keeping her on birth control, despite her wishes to have another baby.
She didn't hold back as she spoke out candidly about her feelings for the first time in a very long time. Variety published her words in full, in which she declared, "I’m not here to be anyone’s slave." She added:
"I’ve lied and told the whole world 'I’m OK and I'm happy.' It's a lie. I thought I just maybe if I said that enough, maybe I might become happy, because I've been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized … I’m so angry it’s insane. And I'm depressed. I cry every day."
In the time since her first hearing, Britney was dealt with some setbacks, but her hiring of Rosengart has yielded positive outcomes for the star. Britney also took her newfound freedom to finally speak out against certain family members, such as her sister Jamie-Lynn Spears, on social media.
This legal battle has certainly split the Spears family, with Lynne siding with her daughter. In July 2021, she spoke out against her ex-husband and showed her support for Britney.
