Britney Spears' Attorney 'Aggressively' Moving To Remove Father As Conservator
Jul 20, 2021
On July 15, a judge ruled that Britney can choose her own lawyer in the fight to end her conservatorship — a freedom that was only just now allowed to her for the first time in 13 years. This news came as a welcome change for the singer, who had been dealt with a blow after a judge denied her request to end her controversial conservatorship even after her explosive testimony.
The attorney Britney appointed herself, Matthew Rosengart, has just made a new statement in which he thanked Britney's fans all over the world before announcing that he and his team would be moving very quickly to remove Jamie as conservator.
Like many celebrities who have felt the glare of fame from a young age, Britney Spears went through a tumultuous time in the late 2000s. Constantly being plagued by cameras and paparazzi aren't easy to manage no matter how experienced you are, but Britney was overcome by the difficulties as she was not only one of the world's biggest pop stars but a young mother at the time. Her public "breakdown" in 2007 made her an object of public scrutiny for years.
Her erratic behavior also led to her father becoming her legal conservator. A conservatorship is usually granted for individuals who are unable to make their own decisions, like those with dementia or other mental illnesses — and Britney's father, Jamie Spears, has essentially managed her life and finances for more than 13 years.
With the release of the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" in Feb. 2021 and the ongoing "Free Britney" movement, Britney's case has become extremely important today. The ongoing court battle continues to be in the news, with updates arriving very frequently at this point.
Talking with reporters outside of the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, Britney Spears' lawyer — whom she appointed herself — Matthew Rosengart, thanked a number of people and spoke of his plans in the case. He first thanked Britney "for her courage and for her strength" before extending the same gratitude to Judge Penny "for her courtesy and welcoming" his firm and himself into the case. He then thanked Britney's fans and supporters around the world for their "outreach and support" of Britney and he and his firm, calling it "overwhelming." Finally, Rosengart spoke clearly about his firm's plans in the case, stating:
"My firm and I are moving aggressively and expeditiously to file a petition to remove Jamie Spears unless he resigns first."
Jamie Spears has been responsible for making legal and financial decisions on Britney's behalf for the last 13 years, with Britney condemning his involvement in her bombshell court testimony last month. During her 24-minute-long testimony, she accused her conservators of forcing her to perform against her will, making her take mood-stabilizing drugs, and keeping her on birth control, despite her wishes to have another baby.
She didn't hold back as she spoke out candidly about her feelings for the first time on June 23. Variety published her words in full, in which she declared, "I’m not here to be anyone’s slave." She added:
"I’ve lied and told the whole world 'I’m OK and I'm happy.' It's a lie. I thought I just maybe if I said that enough, maybe I might become happy, because I've been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized … I’m so angry it’s insane. And I'm depressed. I cry every day."

In her testimony, Britney didn't mince her words when describing what had been going on and what she wants from the court:
"I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. … I don't feel like I can live a full life. … I want this conservatorship to end without having to be evaluated."
She also stated, "And I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you." Despite her damning allegations and a slew of resignations by those who have been involved in the case, Jamie has yet to step down in his role as conservator.
Now that Britney has representation she hired herself, her case appears to finally be making headway. In court last week, Rosengart argued that the conservatorship wasn't ever appropriate in the first place and made a clear statement toward Jamie, as reported by NPR:
“If he loves his daughter, it’s time to step aside so Ms. Spears can move forward to a healthy, productive life."
Tragically, by the sound of it, there appears to be little love from Jamie for his superstar daughter. With everything out in the open now, Britney took to social media to slam those closest to her in an expletive-filled post in which she called out her father and sister for their silence through the years. In the Instagram post, she included a long caption that made her anger clear, while the photo featured a quote that simply said:
"Never forget who ignored you when you needed them and who helped you before you even asked."
