Fruit is healthy and is usually low in calories, making it a perfect snack when you're hungry. One easy and relatively cheap fruit to enjoy are bananas. But have you ever had the chance to enjoy Blue Java bananas?

Blue Java bananas are not your typical bananas. If you have never had the pleasure of trying one, you need to find a store near you that sells them. Not only do these bananas have a taste that is similar to vanilla ice cream, but the fruit also has a very similar consistency.

If the bananas are unripe, they will have a blue peel. That is the reason why this sweet fruit is called what it is. When the bananas are ready to eat, you will see that they have a green or yellow peel.

If you've ever been to Hawaii, you may have heard them called ice cream bananas. In Fiji, they are referred to as Hawaiian bananas. Residents of Central America call them Cenizo. Whatever they are called, they are certainly fresh and delicious.

Most bananas will not thrive in colder climates. Your typically yellow banana will usually die if the temperature outside dips to lower than 28 degrees Fahrenheit. However, this isn't the case for Blue Java bananas, which can thrive in colder climates. If you live in zones 9b through 11 or zones 8 through 11, you may have success growing your own Blue Java bananas. Mature Blue Java trees will reach 15-20 feet.

This variety of banana will grow well when the water and soil are rich. You will want to make sure that the soil is watered regularly, but you also don't want to drown the plants. Fertilizer is recommended when the weather is warm. Blue Java banana plants will need a lot of light to grow, so make sure they are planted in an area that gets plenty of sunshine.

You can eat Blue Java bananas like ice cream if you peel and freeze them first. Throw them in the blender for a sweet, dairy-free treat. They are wonderful no matter how you eat them.
