Bindi Irwin's Gorgeous Wedding Dress Was Homage To Father Steve Irwin
Apr 06, 2020
We often remember Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late Steve Irwin, the so-called Crocodile Hunter, when she was a young girl. But Bindi is all grown up and on March 25 the 21-year-old got married to her fiancée Chandler Powell in a secret ceremony at Australia Zoo. They had planned for a large wedding of 200 guests, but the Coronavirus pandemic caused them to change their plans, opting to go ahead with a mere three very personal guests. What's most touching is Bindi's wedding dress paid homage to her father, with a sleeve detail that held a very special memory for her.
Posting an image from their special day to Instagram, Bindi wrote a touching caption to go alongside the stunning photo: "March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now."
She goes on to explain that they'd been planning the wedding for nearly one year but in the end had to scrap their plans and change everything, opting to go ahead with the wedding itself, without guests. Bindi added, "This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos."

Bindi has since shared a couple of photos on her personal Instagram, while People Magazine has the exclusive photos. Bindi spoke with the magazine about how her gorgeous wedding dress included a subtle nod to her father Steve. She originally wanted something similar to her mother Terri's wedding dress, but as the dress was an old family heirloom, it was too old to be tailored to fit Bindi. Instead, she wore a dress from Paddington Weddings in Brisbane, a bridal boutique that specializes in 100% Australian made wedding dresses. The gown featured distinctive sunflower lace sleeves that "mimicked" her mom's dress and "reminded me of my family and my dad," she told People.
She continued, "When we would go on projects and drives together, we'd often drive through these huge sunflower fields in the middle of nowhere and we always stopped to take them in. [The dress] was really special and beautiful." She described the moment she saw the A-line gown and knew immediately it was the one: "It was just perfect, I said, 'Oh my goodness, that's the dress,' and we all started crying again."
Bindi looked stunning on her special day and it seems that despite the change of plans, her and Chandler had a wonderful wedding, with only Bindi's mother Terri, her younger brother Robert, and her dad's best friend Wes Mannion as guests. And a lot of animals apparently!
It's great that she's been able to share moments of her special day with the public, but her message regarding the current pandemic is even more touching. Writing on the same Instagram post of her wedding photo, Bindi said: "Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history. Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this - stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!"
