Bindi Irwin Pays Tribute To Late Dad Steve Irwin With Touching Jewelry Choice
May 11, 2023
Although it has been years since renowned Australian television personality and wildlife Steve Irwin passed in 2006, his family – wife Terri Irwin and children Bindi Irwin and Robert Irwin – have kept his legacy alive and are sure to remember him as they pass every major milestone of their lives. Alongside cherishing past memories with their father and sharing them with the world, they are all continuing his legacy of being a doting family man.
Steve rose to fame with the show “The Crocodile Hunter” in 1996. His enthusiastic and energetic manner won him a legion of fans, and viewers returned episode after episode to catch up with his lively and animated presenting style. Consistently clad in his signature khakis, the show made Irwin a household name and introduced his catchphrase “Crikey!” to the wider world.
Steve also picked up fans in the U.S. through his frequent appearances on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” He was also a committed conservationist, launching the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, International Crocodile Rescue, the Lyn Irwin Memorial Fund and the Iron Bark Station Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility.
Steve and Terri married in 1992 and welcomed Bindi in 1998 and Robert in 2003. But tragedy struck in 2006: while filming an episode for “Ocean’s Deadliest” in the Great Barrier Reef, Steve was stabbed in the heart by a short-tail stingray barb. His death shocked fans who had watched Steve for years put himself in challenging situations to create awareness of the natural world.
Now, Bindi has honored her father once again by donning a sentimental and touching trinket at an annual gala dinner in his memory.
Bindi became a conservationist and television star in the spirit of her late father, Steve. At the age of 9, Bindi hosted the children’s wildlife documentary “Bindi the Jungle Girl.” Although the show aired in 2007 after Steve’s death, he had filmed episodes of the show prior in which he, Terri and Bindi would take an up-close look at certain animals. She also made appearances in shows such as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Larry King Live” and was a contestant on “Dancing With The Stars” in 2015.
On Mar. 25, 2020, Bindi married former professional wakeboarder Chandler Powell and, in keeping with the family’s love for animals, the pair held their secret wedding in the gardens of Australia Zoo in Queensland. The ceremony even included a koala — not to mention a beautiful floral arrangement.
Powell has joined the Irwin family to continue Steve Irwin’s legacy as well and works at the Australia Zoo. He is also part of the non-profit foundation, “Wildlife Warriors Program,” which was founded in 2002 by Steve and Terri and continues to be run by Bindi today.
The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, on their first wedding anniversary, and we can’t think of a sweeter way to celebrate their first year of marriage together. The couple posted about their daughter’s birth on Instagram, and Bindi explained that the name she had chosen for her child – Grace Warrior Irwin – was in honor of her late father.
“Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior,” she wrote.
The close-knit family continues to carry on Steve’s conservation legacy after his untimely death and run Australia Zoo, upholding Steve’s mission of “Conservation Through Exciting Education.” as per the official Australia Zoo website.

Every year, the Irwin family also hosts the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner in Brisbane and Los Angeles, in tribute to his memory and life’s work. The annual events serve to honor the late “Wildlife Warrior’s” larger-than-life personality as well as his incredible passion for the natural world and all its creatures. Guests are treated to a night filled with great food, entertainment, guest speakers and a live auction, all while contributing to the charities the Irwin family support.
In 2023, the Los Angeles dinner was held on May 6, and the Irwins showed up in style. Now 19-year-old Robert looked handsome in a slim-fitted dark suit, although the smart casual look belied a bit of his fun-loving nature. Bindi shared a cute clip of her posing for photographers prior to the start of the gala at its venue, only to be photobombed by a gleeful Robert who jumped into the frame. It seems the bond between these two siblings are still as strong as ever.
The bond between Bindi and her father also remains strong, judging by Bindi’s outfit of the night. Bindi wore a black turtleneck tucked into a tiered, floral skirt and paired them with a black jacket. But what really stole the show was her jewelry. Close to her heart, Bindi wore a gold necklace with a pendant that carried a portrait of her late father, Steve. As she posed for photos, Bindi held up the pendant as a reminder to all what the night was truly about.
It’s clear the memories of Steve will carry on in the Irwin family for many years to come and it’s no doubt Bindi will honor his legacy by living out the rest of her life in his spirit.
