Bindi Irwin Honored Father Steve With Khaki Ribbon On Bridal Bouquet
Apr 07, 2020
Bindi Irwin, daughter of 'crocodile hunter' Steve Irwin, decided to honor her late father during her wedding on March 25th. Bindi got engaged to her boyfriend, Chandler Powell, last summer. The couple had originally planned the wedding for April 4th, 2020, but due to the public health pandemic, they had to tie the knot a little earlier. However, Bindi did not forget to honor her father Steve in multiple ways, including a khaki ribbon on her bouquet.
Bindi Irwin married Chandler Powell on March 25th at Australia Zoo. The ceremony was small and included only Bindi's mother Terri, her brother Robert, and Wes Mannion, who was a longtime best friend of Bindi's late father, Steve Irwin.
Bindi announced her marriage on her Instagram page with a post saying:
“Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory.”

Along with the candle-lighting ceremony, Bindi and Chandler continued to honor Steve throughout their wedding. In an interview with People, Bindi disclosed that she had wrapped her bridal bouquet with a khaki ribbon to pay homage to her father's signature all-khaki outfit. Bindi told People:
“Most brides have something blue; I had my khaki."
Bindi's mother, Terri, tweeted about how she believes Steve is still with them and would have worn khaki to Bindi's wedding if he was still with them. Terri tweeted:
“I know Steve would have worn khaki to Bindi & Chandler’s wedding… I wish he could have been there to see the most special day in his daughter’s life. We miss him so much.”
Aside from the khaki ribbon on the bouquet, Bindi honored her dad by having a photo of her father at the altar that featured Steve with his dog, Sui. The choice to use a photo of her father with the dog was meaningful because Bindi's middle name is Sue. Bindi placed the photo on an easel that remained next to her mom and brother Robert for the duration of the ceremony. Bindi told People:
“So mom and Robert were standing right next to dad as we exchanged vows,” she said. “We had a candle-lighting ceremony for him, and it really felt like he was there with us. It was a lovely moment of peace and happiness.”
Even the choice of location honored Steve, as the couple got married in Australia Zoo gardens, an area that was special to Steve. Of the location, Bindi said:
“It’s a beautiful little area where he had filmed for many years,” Bindi said. “It felt really wonderful and just meant to be.”
Even Bindi's wedding dress had special meaning. In another interview with People, Bindi said that she chose the dress because it resembled the one her mother wore when Terri and Steve got married back in 1992. Bindi's wedding dress featured a sunflower pattern on the sleeves that also held a special meaning. Bindi said:
“When we would go on projects and drives together, we’d often drive through these huge sunflower fields in the middle of nowhere and we always stopped to take them in."
