Known for her distinctive image composed of various hair colors and eclectic clothing, Cyndi Lauper has been a role model for many in various areas of life. She has been celebrated for her work in the entertainment world as well as her work as a humanitarian and advocate, and her beauty inside and out has resonated with fans and critics alike.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 22, 1953, Lauper grew up in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, where she enjoyed listening to artists such as The Beatles and Judy Garland.
Finding commercial success and critical acclaim was a huge turning point for the songstress, and she went on to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1985. The industry applauded her for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” and the song’s music video even won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video in 1984.
The songstress has been praised for her songwriting abilities, as well as her absolutely breathtaking vocal arrangements and four-octave vocal range. Her music has been both fun and innovative, and at many times has been a way for her to highlight multiple social issues and forward her work as an advocate.
During her many years in the spotlight, Lauper has had to endure her fair share of hardships both within her career and within her personal life and relationships. Luckily, the now 69-year-old star has also been able to live out her wildest dreams of becoming a successful musician while making a statement along the way.
During a performance at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, on March 14, 2023, Lauper rocked a purple mohawk, all while performing some of her greatest hits.
With songs like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time” and “True Colors,” Lauper has proven to be just as eclectic within her musical range as she is with her fashionable appearance.
The singer has been praised for her amazing voice, and many fans have grown to love her individualistic style, one of her most prominent talents is being a songwriter. Lauper composed both the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots.” The musical was a smash hit and earned 13 nominations at the 2013 Tony Awards, taking home six wins. Lauper herself won the award for Best Original Score, becoming the first solo woman to win in the category.
Throughout her career, Lauper has found a way to highlight social issues that matter to her through her musical works, advocacy, and humanitarianism. Passionate about LGBTQIA+ equality rights, Lauper has served as a member of the Matthew Shepard Foundation Board, and her song, “Above the Clouds,” celebrates the memory of Matthew Shepard. During her True Colors tour, $1 from each ticket sold was given to the Human Rights Campaign. Lauper’s organization, True Colors United, implements innovative solutions to help homeless youth in the LGBTQIA+ community.
During a 2016 interview with AARP, Lauper talked about what it means to be true to yourself no matter what. She said:
“Don’t listen. I find it remarkable when the ‘industry people’ try to pigeonhole you, like they know. Even me, I don’t know what I can do. I want to be great, but I don’t know if I can be great, so I just have to keep trying.”

Lauper continued, “You can’t live your whole life worrying about staying famous. If losing some fame means doing what you want, you gotta go with what you want.”
The singer said she doesn’t “give a hoot” about what others think. “I am who I am. I don’t apologize for any of it,” Lauper elaborated. “But I do hope that what I do in my art inspires people — that it makes ‘em happy and makes ‘em think.”
It’s not hard to see why fans have adored the songstress for so many years. And in March 2023, Lauper gave fans yet another reason to be impressed as she switched up her look while supporting Rod Stewart on tour. According to the Rod Laver Arena’s website, Lauper served as one of the supporting acts for Stewart while he performed at the Australian venue on both March 14, 2023, and March 15, 2023.
During Lauper’s performance, fans, of course, were blown away by her performance, but what really stole the show was the singer’s hairdo. The 69-year-old donned a purple mohawk and rocked the stage as she sang some of her most memorable songs.
This isn’t the first time Lauper has had colorful hair. In 2016, she told AARP, “I think I have reached an age when I can have pink hair if I want — or blue hair. But blue, it turns a little green, so right now I am going with the pink.”
We can’t wait to see what hair color the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer rocks next!
