Jennifer Lopez is one of the most recognizable faces in entertainment — and what a face it is. The actress, singer, and dancer has often been praised for how good she looks for her age, but don’t try that backhanded compliment on her. She’s not likely to take it sitting down.
Born in 1969 in the Bronx borough of New York City, Lopez stole the nation’s hearts with her performance in the 1997 hit biopic “Selena” and hasn’t stopped since. Now in her mid-50s, Lopez is arguably one of the most influential Latin performers in the world. Her movies have grossed over $3 billion, and she has sold around 80 million copies of her musical recordings worldwide.
Lopez’s versatile career in the entertainment industry is as iconic as her timeless beauty. The actress, singer, and dancer has always attracted attention thanks to her sophisticated, young-looking appearance. Lopez has starred in several popular movies like “Maid in Manhattan” and “Marry Me” and has several well-known songs like “All I Have” and “Jenny From The Block,” to mention but a few.
However, 2024 has been a rough year for Lopez. Her ninth album, “This Is Me... Now,” released in February, underperformed commercially. A concert tour, “This Is Me... Live,” which had been set to kick off in June with planned stops in major United States and Canadian cities, was pre-emptively canceled. Lopez cited wanting “time off to be with her children, family and close friends,” as the reason for the cancellation.
However, perhaps the biggest blow Lopez experienced in 2024 was the breakdown of her marriage to Ben Affleck. After separating in April, Lopez filed for divorce in August. Lopez has remained mum on her personal affairs and kept her public appearances to a minimum. However, Lopez couldn’t even catch a break from fashion scrutiny either, as her choices at three events were widely blasted by viewers online.
Lopez co-hosted the 2024 MET Gala on May 6, 2024, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Lopez wore a near-see-through Schiaparelli couture gown bedecked with stone embellishments that accentuated her physique. Fashion designer Mariel Haenn explained that Lopez’s gown took 800 hours to make, and they used over 2,500,000 silver foil bugle beads to finish the dress.
Although effort, time, and many resources were given to produce Lopez’s show-stopping outfit at the MET Gala, some people on social media didn’t seem to understand and appreciate her look at the star-studded fashion event.
“Lookin like Jenny did her own hair and makeup lookin tired and too old for see thru,” a user on Facebook commented.
“The hair and makeup is terrible! She looks tired,” another said on Instagram, echoing other’s similar comments, “Why did no one on her team have the guts to tell her how bad the make-up was? As a makeup artist, all I can say to the person that applied this is we do not claim you!”
Some users thought Lopez had been wearing fairly similar outfits on many occasions.
“I feel like she always wears the same type of gown. Super sparkly, prom lookin, muted colors. It’s boring,” one pointed out.
“She's beautiful but dress decent it's getting old and so is she, wonder what her kids will think when [they are] older,” another chastised.
“She looks beautiful as always but I feel like her dress is like all the other dresses she has worn in her lifetime. I guess I want to see something unique and different at the Met Gala,” a fan wrote.
After drawing flak for her makeup and gown, some were also irked by her hairstyle, referring to it as their “everyday mom bun.”
"It looks like she tossed up a messy bun after a day at the beach,” one said.

On Sept. 10, 2024, Lopez attended the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her film, “Unstoppable.” No stranger to making bold fashion choices, Lopez stepped out in a silver floor-length gown made of glimmering metallic squares, drawing comparisons to a disco ball. However, it wasn’t just the material of the dress that captured people’s attention. The gown appeared to be made of two swathes of the silver material bound together at the sides by oversized black ribbons that exposed both sides of her body and a significant amount of skin. While the look certainly turned heads at the event, it fared less successfully in gaining public approval.
“Definitely a worst dressed winner🏅” one user dubbed her, while another said, “This is terribly unflattering and ill fitting.”
“It has nothing to do with her age, it just a horrible dress,” one commenter said more objectively, while a contrasting comment read, “Not age appropriate in my opinion.”
Others tried to absolve Lopez of responsibility.
“She needs to take revenge out on her stylist,” one user remarked, as another added, “It’s an abomination. Don’t people look in the mirror before leaving the house? Fire the stylist.”
Others called out the star for appearing too “desperate.”
“A bit too thirsty for my liking,” a user said, while a similar comment read, “Gurl give it a rest ~ too thirsty 💧”
Another user compared the gown to a “disco ball,” as another called it a “revenge dress” that “came back to bite her.”
Despite the negative feedback, some of Lopez’s more ardent fans attempted to defend her. One user conceded that, while the dress “is awful,” Lopez still had a “great figure.” Another sympathetic user wrote:
“Not her best look, but who cares! If she loved it, let it be!”
Lopez also drew mixed reviews for her outfit choice at the 2024 AFI Fest in Hollywood on Oct. 26, 2024. While many praised the star for her on-point, lusciously blown-out hair and glam make-up, her look from the neck downwards threw many others off. Lopez wore an outfit from the brand No. 21 comprising a white collared shirt tucked into a micro-mini pink bubble skirt cinched at the waist with a brown belt. However, the outfit could barely be seen as Lopez also wore an oversized, slouchy beige jacket. The look was rounded off with sky-high platform heels.
“This is definitely not fall fashion, and it's also not flattering. It's giving CHICKEN LEGS and that's not the JLO we know,” one fan said, as another wrote, “I’m not feeling this look. The shoes and the jacket is a no for me.”
“Sorry but Im not feeling her look. And whats up with that sad face? Isnt she promoting her own movie? Smile a little at least!! Flawless? She is just wearing a jacket doubled her size,” a third user lamented, as other users called it a “Ridiculous outfit,” that highlighted her “Old lady knees.”
Others took issue with Lopez’s shoe choice, saying they looked “big on her,” “don’t fit right,” and that she should “get better fitting shoes.”
“With all the money that this woman has, she couldn’t buy shoes that actually fit her?” one user questioned.
Some fans took the middle ground.
“She looks good for 50 regardless of the outfit looking regular,” a user remarked, as another said, “She looks amazing! But the styling is way off.”
Other true blue Lopez fans remained loyal.
“FASHION QUEEN 😍😍😍😍😍” one user exclaimed, as another wrote, “Those legs!!! She looks gorgeous!!😍😍🔥🔥”
“She's the most (GORGEOUS) women to ever exist like you're freaking (STUNNING) 😍” a third fan gushed.
