Charlize Theron is, without a doubt, a bona fide Hollywood star who has cemented her place in the upper echelons of the film industry. The former dancer and model worked her way to the top to become one of the highest-paid actresses in the business and a renowned producer since launching her own production company, Denver and Delilah Productions, in 2003.
Charlize was discovered by a talent agent standing next to her in line at the bank. The bank cashier had refused to let Charlize cash a check, and she was throwing a tantrum when she caught the agent’s attention.
Soon after, Charlize’s career took flight. To secure her role in 1997’s “The Devil’s Advocate,” the actress had to audition six times. She also reportedly stopped grooming herself and slept less just to fit the role of a haunted, haggard wife. It all proved to be worth it, as the movie is now credited as her breakout film. She won her first Academy Award in 2004 for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film “Monster.”
With more than 60 acting credits to her name, some of Charlize’s most notable films include “Sweet November,” “The Italian Job,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Atomic Blonde,” and “The Old Guard.” But despite maintaining such an enviously venerable reputation in film, Charlize was still missing one key factor to fulfillment — children.
At 49, Charlize is busy raising her two children — Jackson and August Theron — who she adopted in her 30s, and has been reveling in her most crucial role as a doting mother.
Charlize was born in Benoni, South Africa, on Aug. 7, 1975. The only child began her career as a model in Milan, Italy, at 16 before moving to New York City to pursue her love of dance. After a knee injury ended her ambitions as a ballet dancer, Charlize soon turned to acting. It turns out that it was not just an interest of hers but her calling.
“The first time I ever acted, it felt right, as if that’s what I’m supposed to do with my bones,” she said.
Another thing that came naturally to her later in life was adopting her two children — first Jackson in 2012 and then his sibling in August 2015.
In 2019, Charlize told NPR that she did not have a specific country in mind when she applied to adopt.
“I wanted to believe that somehow my child would find me in the way that we were just meant to be,” she told the outlet.
She also later elaborated to People that her vision of motherhood had always included adoption: “Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day. This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first.”
In another interview, Charlize said, “The fact that I got to choose when I wanted to be a mom, where I travel a lot, and I see a lot of young girls not have that choice,” and added: “There’s a great power in choosing when to be a mother and doing it when your body, your mind and everything is celebrating all of that. I know that this is what I can handle.”

When Charlize finally adopted Jackson and August in 2012, she revealed to NPR that everything that she had “hoped would happen during” her adoption process “did happen” because “these two babies were meant to be in my life — and they’re my children.”
When she first adopted Jackson, she initially thought she was a boy.
“Yes, I thought she was a boy, too,” Charlize told The Daily Mail. “Until she looked at me when she was three years old and said: ‘I am not a boy! So there you go! I have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive.”
In an interview with ELLE, Charlize revealed that she learned about perspective after she became a mother.
“Perspective. I just see things clearer. A child in my twenties was the scariest idea I could think of. When I got to my thirties, I was so ready. But there’s a moment where you’re like, Oh God, I hope once I have my kids, I’m still going to want to be a parent this much,” she added.
According to Charlize, she also has “bad days” and has made mistakes like any other parent.
“Going through the tantrum stages when they’re such little assholes. And they choose the worst moments. It’s a lot for one person. But after six years of having my two nuggets, there’s not a day when I wish I hadn’t done this,” she said.
Despite the challenges of single motherhood juxtaposed with the luxuries of a thriving Hollywood career, Charlize told The Hollywood Reporter that if she had to choose between the two, there was no question which she would pick.
Charlize frequently posts photos of herself and her two daughters on social media, specifically on her Instagram account.
In celebration of National Daughters Day in 2020, Charlize posted a lovely photo of the three of them together, smiling before a unicorn-themed cake.
“My heart belongs to these two beautiful powerhouses. I will never be the same. Happy #NationalDaughtersDay ❤️,” she captioned.
Fans were thrilled to see Charlize and her daughters getting closer and closer year after year. On Mar. 28, 2024, Charlize posted a carousel of photos she took when she and her children went to the Magic Kingdom Park Disney World in Florida for Spring Break.
