Although the 49-year-old Oscar winner Angelina Jolie has been avoiding the spotlight and primarily focusing on being a mother, her leading role in the 2024 film “Maria” is getting her out and about.
During promotions for the biopic, Jolie — who shares children Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox with ex-husband Brad Pitt — gave some interesting insights about her six children’s future career paths.
The Pablo Larraín-directed movie stars Jolie as Maria Callas, the iconic opera diva who helped define the art form. Set in Paris in 1977, the film depicts the final years of the singer's life as she attempts to make a comeback to the stage.
In detail, Jolie spent long hours learning to sing, move and breathe like the soprano — an artist both shaped and constrained by her public persona.
During an August 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Larraín said that, just like Callas: “Angelina has an enormous amount of mystery. I thought she could play this woman who is looking to find her own identity.”
Jolie is rousing Oscar buzz for her portrayal of the legendary opera singer in the film. Despite already having an Academy Award on her shelf, Jolie noted that the recognition "feels really nice."
"Any support, or anything that says you did your job well," she shared, "especially when it's one when you care about so much, it means a lot."
During a red carpet appearance for the premiere of "Maria" in Los Angeles in October 2024, Jolie opened up and even gave some intel on what the future holds for her precious kids.
Jolie revealed that she doesn't think her children will follow in their famous parents’ footsteps, explaining why it is unlikely for them to pursue acting careers.
"No, I think they're especially shy, very private people,” she told E! News at the AFI premiere in Los Angeles on Oct. 27, 2024. She added, "and they want to be private."
It looks like the Jolie-Pitt kids are forging their own unique paths in life. While they probably won't be reaching for their own film scripts anytime soon, they’re no strangers to the world of filmmaking. In fact, Jolie’s two eldest children joined in behind the scenes, working alongside director Larraín on “Maria.”
"Mad and Pax were on this one doing AD (assistant directing) work," Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter in August. "They’ve done that quite a few times, and I think that’s good for them."
She added, "Pax tends to do stills (photography) and he gets brought in, and Pablo was wonderful and recognized that he was good at it."
And it looks like having the support of her family relieved some of the filming pressure off of her.
"I have never had a set where my family is not allowed to be there because I’m focusing — I’m not that person," she explained. "You can climb all over me or visit. It really meant a lot that my boys were with me on Maria. When I would have really heavy times, they would come over and just give me a hug or a cup of tea."
"That was probably one of the more intense things was that — usually when I’m expressing that much pain, it’s not in front of my children," Jolie went on.
"You really try to hide from your children how much pain and sadness you carry. And so for them to be with you when you’re expressing it at such a level, I think it was the first time they ever heard me cry like that." She added, "That’s usually for the shower."
It’s always a rare sight to see the children of Hollywood stars step away from the spotlight, but with their diverse passions and strong desire for privacy, it's only a matter of time before we see what their future paths take.
