Actor Michael Cera's Son’s Birth Was Not Revealed For A Reason

Michael Austin Cera is renowned for his roles in “Arrested Development,” “Superbad,” and “Juno.” The multi-hyphenate is also a musician and released his first album in 2014. In addition, Cera plays the bass guitar and played on tour for Mister Heavenly, an indie rock supergroup.

The Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star became interested in acting at three when he binged on “Ghostbusters” while down with chicken pox. He fell in love with actor Bill Murray at the time. To follow his dream, the Canadian actor attended The Second City, an improvisational comedy troupe and theater in Toronto, for classes.

Cera started his acting career with an unpaid role in a commercial. However, the role opened him to further opportunities as he landed his first role with lines in a Pillsbury commercial. The actor then made his film debut in 2000 in “Frequency.” He auditioned for and successfully landed a role in “Arrested Development,” which was canceled after three seasons. However, Cera felt it was a blessing that the series lasted that long, considering the cast didn’t think it would go beyond the first season. He told Esquire: 

“Arrested Development never felt safe. Even the first season, we did thirteen episodes, and we thought we’d never do a back nine. So I never thought in a million years we’d get to make three seasons. I was happy we got that far. I thought it was really good, and I’m really proud of it. I don’t think we made a bad episode.”

Fans of the renowned actor were shocked when they found out he already has a kid. Cera later shared on the “Life Is Short” podcast in Sept. 2022 why he didn’t disclose it publicly. Keep reading to know what he said. 

Despite Cera’s penchant for making waves in his movies, including the Blockbuster movie, “Barbie,” he keeps a notoriously private life. He dated actress Aubrey Plaza for a year and a half, but the public only got to know after they broke up. Meanwhile, Plaza broke the news. 

“Oh, Michael. I dated him for a long time,” she said during a 2016 interview on RuPaul and Michelle Visage’s podcast What’s the Tee? “A year and a half. We drove across the country after we shot that movie and almost got married in Vegas.”

Cera and Plaza remain friends to date despite their breakup and Cera being married. 

“We love each other. We’re still really good friends,” Plaza said on the podcast. “He’s just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language. He’s one of the funniest people I know.”

Reports revealed that the actor was married in 2018 after he was spotted wearing a gold wedding band on his ring finger during an outing with his girlfriend Nadine. It is unclear when the pair started dating or got hitched as Cera remained tight-lipped about it, just as he is with details of his wife, whose maiden last name remains unknown.

Although fans were already accustomed to Cera’s privacy, they were still surprised when they learned that he and his wife had welcomed a son in 2021. They got to know in March 2022 when the actor’s “Life & Beth” costar, Amy Schumer, mentioned it during an interview with ET for the movie’s promotion. 

Schumer accidentally revealed the news while talking about her son, Gene, 2. 

“Michael has a baby, too,” she said before she realized what had happened and asked, “Is that public knowledge?” She added, “I just outed him, I just outed his baby.”

The “Juno” actor later shed more light in a subsequent interview with ExtraTV when he said about his son, “He’s just a little 6-month-old baby.”

He further revealed why he didn’t announce his son’s birth when the baby was born on Justin Long’s “Life Is Short podcast” in Sept. 2022. Cera disclosed that he didn’t know how to go about it since he has no social media presence. 

“I just didn’t tweet about it,” he told his host. “I don’t know what the protocol is (when you have a kid).” 

The musician added that he and his wife didn’t share their son’s pictures because they wanted to respect his privacy. 

“I don’t know if he would consent to being posted,” he said.

Long then asked his guest if he had always wanted to be a dad, but Cera didn’t answer in the usual way. 

“A lot of my (guy) friends when I asked that question, mostly everyone says, ‘Yeah’. But that was never my response or my feeling,” Cera started. “I was just not that defined in my own feelings about it because I was enjoying my life. I could have gone on like that,” he explained. 

However, he revealed that since he welcomed his son, he doesn’t see himself living without him. 

“It’s so great. You can’t even measure how much joy (it’s been),” the dad of one gushed. “Throughout the day, it’s just like amazing.”

Meanwhile, being a dad has shifted Cera’s priorities. He revealed that being away from his son is hard. 

“When you’re working you really miss the kids,” he said. “I just think about him all day and look at pictures of him when I’m away from him.”
