9 Things That Have Nothing To Do With Exercise Or Diet That Will Help You Lose Weight

Nov 27, 2018

Losing weight can be a daunting task. Many are put off by the idea of having to eat only certain foods while exercising regularly, and while exercise and diet are necessary for weight loss, there are ways to lose weight without having to go to the gym or changing your diet. Here are some tricks that will help you lose weight that don't require drastic amounts of exercise and dietary changes.

1. Add Ice To Your Drinks

Everything we eat and drink is warmed by our bodies to body temperature as part of a process of thermoregulation that burns calories. When you add ice to drinks like coffee, juice, or tea (and drinking through a straw), you introduce coolness that requires more heat for these bodily processes, which in turn burns calories. The same goes for cold foods.

2. Buy A Smaller Dress

A good way to remind yourself to lose weight is by getting a new dress or new jeans that are a few sizes too small for you before hanging them up somewhere so that you can be able to see it regularly.

3. Chew Mint Gum If You're Slightly Hungry

Chewing sugar-free mint gum is a great alternative to an unhealthy snack when you're feeling just a little hungry. This is because the mint flavor removes the urge to eat by dulling the functions of your taste buds.

4. Drink Alcohol From A Long, Narrow Glass

Did you know that you drink 25-30% less when your beverage is in a tall glass? According to Dr. Brian Wansink this is an optical illusion that tricks the brain. It's also been proven that glasses that are low and wide tend to have more poured into them.

5. Eat Off Of A Red Plate

Studies show that those who eat from red plates are likely to eat less than those eating from plates of different colors. This may seem odd until you realize that the color is associated with prohibition, which prevents people from overeating at an instinctive level. That said, this only works for those who are eating unhealthy food.

6. Get More Sleep

A study published in the magazine Nature Communications in 2013 discovered that people who get 6 hours or less of sleep each tend to eat more high-calorie foods than those who sleep the minimum 7-8 hours. So be sure that you're getting all the sleep you need!

7. Get Unhealthy Foods Out Of Your Sight

It's been proven that being able to see high-calorie foods is more likely to cause weight gain than if you were to hide them or keep fruit out. You're more tempted to eat when you see an unhealthy (but tasty) snack, so remember to only have healthy fruits visible in your house.

8. Increase Your Protein Intake

Research shows that increasing the amount of high-protein foods in your diet by 15% can help you eat 440 fewer calories. In fact, studies show that this calorie decrease can help you lose 10 pounds in 12 weeks without having to limit the foods you eat.

Foods with the highest amounts of protein include beans, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, fish, and lean and/or red meat.

9. Lose Weight With A Partner

A study showed that people who worked out with others to lose weight typically reached their goal 20% more often than those who don't. Work with friends or join a weight-loss group so you can make the process more rewarding.

BONUS: Lose Fat With Ice Packs

Researchers at the University of Maastricht found that cold temperatures burn fat by transforming white fat into brown fat which is metabolized much more easily. Just wrap an ice pack in some thin cloth and place on an area of fat. Do this for 30 minutes each day for 12 days to see results.

If you don't want frostbite, then watch out for symptoms that include skin numbness, skin redness, and tingling. If you notice these symptoms, stop right away.
