It's very common knowledge that sleep is a vital part of our wellbeing. Sleeping at least 7-9 hours is important to getting full rest and having the body recover from the day. There is a problem, however, with sleeping too long every night. In fact, here are six problems you may face if you sleep too long every night.

It might seem counterintuitive, but according to the Harvard School of Health getting too much sleep can actually backfire and lead to you feeling exhausted for the rest of the day. The key is to get the exact amount of sleep your body needs. 

Prone To Weight Gain

The problem most people don't realize regarding their health is that their sleeping patterns can largely affect their weight. If you sleep for a long period consistently, the body gets stuck and can gain weight.

The reason being is that your body moves less than you should because you are stuck in bed. It's easy to lack motivation to continue working out or doing more when you have had too long of a sleep.

This is also very obvious when you take a nap in the middle the day and feel so rested when you wake up that you don't have the energy to do more. It's the same concept but just a different analogy.

It might give you the blues

It's very common for those dealing with depression and other mental health issues will also have sleep disorders. Depending on the kind of issue, those with depression will sleep more than normal. Long sleep can cause a sense of fatigue and despair.

The feeling of refusing to leave your bed afraid of tackling the day so you throw in another hour or two. This could lead to a lack of enthusiasm and energy in the day, and these are all symptoms that could eventually turn into depression.

Insomnia

Insomnia can oftentimes be caused by unhealthy sleeping habits and patterns that don't naturally add up. Too much or too little sleep one day can alter the rest of your week. If you were to stay up one night and decide to sleep in for the next day, you can suffer from insomnia that night.

Just a few days of confusion can ruin your body clock and cause more problems down the road. The more out of order your sleeping patterns are, the worse it can get.

Memory Loss

Another thing to remember is that if you wake up in the middle of the night, it means you aren't getting enough deep sleep. This could cause the brain's cognitive functions to lose its ability to concentrate.

How To Get Just The Right Amount Of Sleep

The key is to have a normal sleeping pattern. Try to sleep around the same time every night. Waking up at the same time also helps. It's vital to keep a healthy lifestyle by working out every day, eating the right foods, drinking plenty of water, and doing plenty of self-care.

The most vital thing to remember is that sleep is a daily function that gives you your rest every night but don't let it be more than that. If you are getting the right amount of hours every night, your body is going to function at its highest level.
