While Abra was trying to help Nick, she noticed that he was breathing but totally unresponsive, CBS reported. This could have made her panic and lose focus, but she didn't and stayed by her husband's side.
Nick had open eyes, yet he was unable to respond to her commands. He was completely debilitated due to the severity of the seizure that he was having while swimming. On top of the summer heat, Nick even could have been dealing with worse.

Arrival Of The Family
Before returning home, Abra was alarmed to find out that Nick had decided to go swimming to cool down after working out. He only remembers stepping into the pool, but after falling unconscious, things began to turn into a blur.
The fact that Nick has type 1 diabetes was not the issue, he has dealt with that for quite some time. What scared Abra, and Nick as well, was the fact that this was his first time having a seizure. This meant that this chance happening could mean things couldn’t have been much worse had he not been discovered.
Nick Was Not Wearing His Blood Sugar Sensor
The importance of wearing a blood sugar sensor is key when taking into account the fact that this was Nick's first time having a seizure, as CBS reports. Not once before did he ever experience something that could possibly have been prevented. There is reason to believe that this may have played a factor in his unfortunate situation.
The 15-year-old acted quickly as the barking dog alerts them to the scene of Nick drowning slowly in his backyard pool. As described in an interview Abra did with Downbeach, Nick simply went out into his backyard to cool off after a workout, and then he began to convulse. Lauren found her father unresponsive and leaped into action to help get Nick safely out of the pool.
Laura and her friend definitely are due the credit for leaping into action when they realized the situation at hand. This quick thinking allowed them to call emergency services without delay to get Nick the help that he needed.
Once the paramedics arrived, they were able to get Nick’s blood sugar levels back up and help him out of the pool completely. No one thought that a simple workout could go so terribly wrong, and in this case, nearly result in death.
