12 Unexpected Natural Remedies Made With Onions For Common Illnesses And How To Make Them

Feb 27, 2018

We all know onions are fantastic for salads or frying up as a side dish, but in fact, that's the very least they're good for! All this time we have been using onions wrong! In this article, you will learn the benefits of using onions for natural remedies. Did you know that onions are high in antiseptic and antibiotic agents due to their high sulfur content?

A Cough

When you are suffering from a bad cough, and the tickle in the back of your throat just won’t go away you need this quick relief! Simply slice an onion in half and add a tablespoon of brown sugar over them, then cover them both for an hour in a cool place if possible. Chew on the onions twice a day.

The sulfur in the onion works as a detox and releases toxins into the body. Thus, its anti-inflammatory contents minimize pain when coughing.

Stop Hair Loss

Start with slicing up the onion into small pieces and then add them to a bowl of boiling water. Continue to wash the onions in the water, then leave it to rest for around 10 minutes. When showering, use the new mixture before applying shampoo. This stage is commonly referred to as the pre-shampoo rinse.

The onions' antimicrobial contents will stop dandruff and speed up the growth of new hair. After a few weeks of carrying out the procedure, you will start to notice stronger and fuller hair.

Reduce Chest Congestion

Smash up the onion into tiny pieces and add coconut oil to create a paste. Cover your entire chest with the paste then lay a dish towel on top.  The vapors that the onions give off in the skin act as a natural antibiotic and improve the immune system, this will soften the mucous which is commonly the root of the problem.

To Calm A Colic Baby

Babies even more than the rest of us need to be soothed and calmed often. An amazing remedy for this with onions is to make them a nice cup of onion tea, and feed them a teaspoon of it every hour until they calm. To make the tea, simply chop up half an onion into circular pieces, pop them in a cup and add hot water. Let it brew for a good 5-10 minutes or until cool before feeding the baby.

The onion will relax muscles and regulate digestion.

Erase Irritation From An Insect Bite

This is the easiest of them all, simply place a slice of onion on an insect bite to sooth it. The anti-inflammatory properties of the onion will minimize inflammation and itching. You can also rub onion juice/oil over the bite to have the same result.

Ear Infections

This is similar to the insect bite, but this time place the chopped up onion into a thin sock and hold it close to your ear, some people prefer to hold it in place with a hat so they don’t have to hold it. Whichever way you do, keep it in place until the pain passes.

Cuts & Wounds

This requires the thin film from onion skin. Carefully remove it without it tearing and place it on top of your wound or cut. The antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties will help to heal the wound or cut and thus will prevent it from becoming infected.

Reduce Pain From A Sore Throat

Make yourself a delicious cup of onion tea but this time with just the onion skin, not the actual onion itself. Again, let it brew and cool before ingesting it (you don’t want to cause more pain!) Continue to take a gulp of your onion tea and gargle it. If the taste is really bad, add some lemon and honey. Doing this will help reduce pain an inflammation.

Vomiting

Make onion juice by grating an onion and ringing the juice out with a cheesecloth. Drink (force yourself) two teaspoons of onion juice and continue to wait a further 5 minutes, once you have done so, take an additional two teaspoons of peppermint tea and wait a further 5 minutes. Repeat these steps until you stop vomiting.

Keeping The Air Fresh And Cleansed

By peeling a few onions and leaving them in a bowl in your living room, the air in the room will be cleansed and any bad bacteria particles that happen to be in the air will be absorbed by the onion. This is the perfect thing to do a couple of days or hours before inviting guests over (or after!)

Sunburn

Sunburn is the worst, especially after you made a conscious effort to fight against it. However, when it happens, before going to bed that night, make sure to soothe the burns with fresh onion. This will reduce inflammation and discomfort. The sulfur in the skin will speed up skin regeneration and reduce the burning effect.

Reduce Fever

Last but not least, chop up a couple of onions into thin circular slices. Rub coconut oil on the bottom of each foot, and apply your thin slices before wrapping it with saran wrap (you may need to ask for help for this one.) Some people prefer to cover the foot completely with a sock, to keep your feet warm. Leave these new onion and plastic wrap socks on overnight to give the onions enough time to draw bad bacteria and toxins out of the body.
