12 Tips For An Amazing And Profitable Garage Sale

May 18, 2018

Putting together a successful garage sale requires some amount of work and motivation but is worth it when the money comes rolling into your pocket. Being organized is key to avoiding the last-minute, thrown together kind of sale that is usually a flop.

Below are 12 tips on how to have the best, and most profitable, garage sale ever!

1. Be Organized

Rounding up your garage sale items throughout the year will help you stay organized when it comes to price your items and place them for sale. Grouping items in certain areas also helps to increase sales such as household items in one spot, toys in another. Hanging clothes sell better than folded ones on a table because shoppers can see the item more clearly.

2. Partner Up

Have a joint sale with at least one friend or neighbor to increase traffic to your sale. Your friend may have items with a bigger draw such as baby items or large ticket items.

3. Location Is Everything

If your sale is hard to find, people will not come to it. Make sure your sale is visible from the street to ensure maximum traffic!

4. Weather Is Important

Holding your sale when it is freezing outside or in the blazing sun will largely decrease your number of shoppers. In places with four seasons, it is best to hold your sale in the spring or fall.

5. Pricing

Make sure your pricing of items is clear and easy for people to find. Shoppers do not like it if they have to keep asking you how much you want for your stuff.

6. Price To Sell

Asking $10 for a pair of pants at a garage sale will not work. You need to keep prices low and even offer bags of clothing for a certain price so shoppers feel like they are getting the best deal possible.

7. Advertise

Putting up signs or putting an ad in your local newspaper, on Craigslist and even on Facebook will help drive traffic to your sale and put more money in your pocket!

8. Food And Drink

Offering bottled water for fifty cents a bottle will not only make you some extra money but will keep your customers happy. Offer some free cookies or chips, too, because customers that are hungry and thirsty will not shop as long!

9. Early Bird Gets The Worm

Start your sale early in the morning to attract the most customers. Many people that like to check out garage sales start out by 7 a.m. You want your sale to be one of the first ones they hit, while they still have plenty of money to spend and are in the mood to shop!

10. Know The Rules And Regulations

Find out ahead of time if you need any type of permit or license to hold your sale. Some cities and counties require these and you do not want your sale to be shut down because you didn’t follow the rules.

11. Keep An Eye On The Clock

As it gets later in the day, start to become more flexible with pricing. The last thing you want to do is pack up a bunch of items to store until next year!

12. Donate

If you do have several items left and do not want to save them for next year, donate them to an organization that will help those in need such as the Salvation Army or local clothing pantry.

Planning ahead and staying organized will help you to have a successful garage sale. Show this to your friends and neighbors so they can join in on your success! Happy Selling!
