10 Foods That Should Be Avoided When On An Empty Stomach

Most diets all have some common factors, they usually will have you avoiding processed foods, added sugar, and consuming a lot of veggies.

While these are some great tips, there is usually a forgotten factor that could help you and you simply may not even be aware.

There are foods that you really don't need to be eating on an empty stomach.

Here is a list of 10 foods that you need to avoid when starting your day:

1. Bananas

Although bananas do contain a lot of vitamins that are good for you, they also contain a good amount of sugar and are acidic. Eating bananas on an empty stomach could cause issues with your intestines. They can also cause your sugar to spike rather quickly and make you to feel a low following the spike. This would leave you very tired in just a couple of hours. You can avoid these problems by mixing your bananas with other foods.

2. Yogurt

It's been pushed down your throat, literally, that fruit is great for breakfast and will help you lose weight. This is true to a degree but doesn't apply to all fruit yogurts. To keep your protein level up and avoid added sugars or artificial sweeteners, go with a plain, Greek yogurt. If you feel it's not sweet enough, you can mix in honey or fruit.

3. Packaged Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great option for breakfast but you are going to want to avoid the instant, already packaged, kind. These are packed full of salt and sugar. If you simply can't live without your packaged oatmeal, get the unsweetened, plain option. Be sure to check the fiber and preservative content when choosing your oatmeal.

4. Raw Veggies - The Green Ones

You wouldn't think that vegetables could ever be bad for you, but eating them on an empty stomach could cause stomach irritation such as bloating, gas, and pain. This is due to the fiber. You probably should just avoid breakfast veggies all together.

5. Tomatoes

This is another one you will want to avoid. While tomatoes can provide you with many nutrients and vitamins, they just don't do well on an empty stomach. Tomatoes cause stomach issues like the ones from the green veggies.

6. Citrus Fruits

If you have diabetes or a sensitive stomach, you'll want to avoid citrus fruits. Because of the high acid in the fruit, this can cause irritation with digestion. Fruits are also high in sugar and this can make your sugar spike which could be dangerous for someone who is diabetic.

If citrus fruits are something you need to remove from your diet, try walnuts instead.

7. Cold Drinks

These can cause irritation to your intestines and stomach. Try having a glass of warm water or milk before you eat. This can help improve your circulation and digestion. 

8. Pears

This is another food that is loaded with vitamins and is low in calories but they contain crude fiber. When you eat pears on an empty stomach, this can actually damage the mucous membrane. You don't have to avoid them completely, just don't eat them before breakfast.

9. Cereals

This is a hard one. Cereal is so convenient, and usually very tasty. The fact that it contains so much sugar and carbs that it's not healthy for you. It may be filling but it's going to cause a spike in your blood sugar which will lead to you craving even more sugary snacks within just a couple of hours.

You can have a smoothy for breakfast, but you'll need to make sure that it's balanced in the right way. A lot of people tend to prepare smoothies that are too low in protein and calories and mainly contain carbs, which makes them contain mostly sugar. Avoid this issue by using yogurts or avocados. You could also have your smoothie as a side to your scrambled eggs to be sure you are getting the protein you need.
